Soon, you go adopt python, tiger, Zebra, lion, etc cos they are all going on extinction...

For the elephant community, I will advise the minister to appoint one elephant to oversee the goings of elephants in the nation.

Do commenters above not understand the meaning of "endangered species"? You all want all facets of the country to work including tourism but don't even understand that wildlife is an integral part of it.

The frequent selective outrage of Nigerians is starting to get irritating. He can adopt the elephant and adopt a kid as well. One does not stop the other. He doesn't even need to ever see the elephant, just some monthly stipends to the elephant's feeding and management.

If the news was that someone killed an elephant while hunting, this same people will be the ones screaming "Nigerians will eat all it's fauna, what will be left for tourism"?

Pick a side and stick with it, not just get outraged when it concerns people you've chosen not to like for whatever reason. I don't have to like someone to understand if their actions are beneficial or not to the environment.
there is time for everything, the very state of things in Nigeria now mean there must be time and priority. People are hungry and the economy is dying. Someone is adopting an elephant.
We are barely surviving in Nigeria right for some to prioritize elephants right now

God bless the man abundantly for doing so.Wildlife must be conserved at all costs and by all means.
God will destroy those who destroy the earth (Revelations 11:18).
Religious fools asslicking their miracle soap selling scamming pastors don't know this passage of the Bible.
On the other hand, adoption of an animal as family member can be far more profitable because animals will never betray you. They are faithful to the core and their love is unconstitutional and undiluted, unlike the fake love of fellow humans who desert you when you need them the most.

Hmmm ... only 300 to 400 elephants remain in the country ... facing extinction. What is done when an animal is facing extinction? Is it not out them on a reservation? ... have strong protection laws with harsh penalties... and most important have them reproduce to increase their number? As the Minister he should know better. He has adopted an elephant .... taking it out of the reproduction pool ... putting the herd animal in a loner animal environment and be broadcasting thinking he is doing a great thing for the animal and elephants when he is doing the opposite ... making a bad situation worse. The influence of Western Media is wayyy greater than we think... this is a clear case of copy copy. People adapt animals that are "homeless" .... or were taken away from their owners who were charged for some form of harm to the animal. Here he is ... adopting an animal ... because it is endangered. I wonder where he's keeping it ... in his backyard. I just wish he would soon be making headline news ... Elephant Gone Wild.

Lol not if the cousin or relative is a Nigerian. As Nigerians we mustn’t loose guard with extended family talkless of strangers.

Nigeria is a reflection of Nigerians not government.

I would rather adopt an elephant anyday of the week, twice on Sunday

Usually 'adopting' an endangered species means keeping it in a relatively protected area till it is safe to release it to the wild.
It is actually part of his job.
If you read the write up all what you have mentioned is part of the plan.

The "adoption" is symbolic. Will help to create and diffuse awareness about the plight of the species. It's a good move.
