Mom is not a grammarian, she's just teaching you what you refused to learn from teachers daddy and mummy paid for for YOUR school teachers. You can call her names but these little things will save you for life. You start asking why you don't have jobs when you don't know how to conduct yourself and have conversations with people. Not everyone is in your generation and those who hold the economy for now are her agemates.

Might be a tad annoying, especially when directed at others, but I appreciate that's she's so particular about speaking well, for herself. At her age. There's absolutely nothing wrong with knowing the right phrases and sentence structures or anything of the sort, imo. It's obviously a way of bettering oneself.

Reminds me of my mother too.

Grew up walking around egg shells with her where Grammar was concerned.

She had the ear for errors.

Might be the reason I excelled massively in English and Literature, even though I majored in the Medical Sciences and IT. tongue

This look good but very annoying.

I schooled in the U.S, I leaved in Europe and I have been so privilege to travel to few English speaking countries.

But I still write very poorly and I don't know how to punctuate properly. I still have at least a weak Southern Nigeria accent and do you know what?

In the US I saw people who can't even read nor write (Both Whites and Blacks). But it is more common among the black community.
This is a country where English is the only language majority of them know as their first language.

Even in the U.K they are born British blacks that can neither read nor write well.

Even White authors still give their books to Editors and pay them huge amount of money before publishing.

SO WHY SHOULD I BE ASHAMED??

And for all those Sabi-Sabi grammarians correcting peoples writings and measuring it to their I.Q. here on Nairaland,

"Check up on" is indeed a phrasal verb, and using it in a sentence is grammatically sound. In this case, your grammarian mom is incorrect on that point. grin

My ex, who didn't know how to write with punctuation, would always pick a fight when I wrote the right way, saying I was being formal. To write good English is being formal; anyway, good riddance. 😂
