Can Removing Import Duties Reduce Nigeria's Food Price? by DyshApp(op): 2:46pm On Aug 15, 2024
Nigeria’s food prices have been soaring lately, causing a lot of concern for both the government and everyday folks.

The big idea to tackle this issue? Axing import duties on food items—a move that once seemed out of reach. Import duties are basically taxes slapped on goods coming into the country, and they can make stuff way more expensive for consumers.

By slashing or even removing these taxes, the Nigerian government could potentially bring down food prices and boost food security.

Customs Comptroller-General Bashir Adeniyi recently weighed in, saying that scrapping duties on imported food is a step in the right direction. He noted, "The protest was about several issues, including ending hunger. We found out that a lot of our food is imported. Importation takes time, so to ease the burden of import costs, the president has temporarily suspended customs duties and taxes on imported food items."

Import duties are meant to protect local industries, bring in revenue, and regulate the flow of goods. But these taxes also jack up prices for imported essentials like rice, wheat, and processed foods—items that Nigeria can’t produce enough of locally.

When import duties are in place, importers face extra costs, which are usually passed on to consumers. For a country like Nigeria that leans heavily on imported food, these duties can really hit the wallet.

But can the removal of import duties really cut down food prices?

Can retailers and market women reduce price huh Even if government is to cancel every payment on imported food items, they will always look for an excuse to maintain their old prices

It's the trying that's one of the problems and for how long because they didn't mention it, it just feel like a way to stop the protest and then after it's done business will resume as usual

Nigerians prefer to do fine-boi and fine-gal rather than do productive things. This is just a short cut to the solution, the real solution is for both big, medium and small players to invest in agriculture.

At a time in China, they decided that if they couldn't; feed themselves, then they should die. It was that hunger that helped to reset their brain and they are better off for it.
