The company claimed that its personnel, including the Chief Financial Officer of Zhongfu Nigeria Ltd. (a subsidiary of Zhongshan), Mr Wenxiao Zhao, suffered verbal and physical assault by the police, acting on orders from the state government. The Ogun State Police Public Relations Office, Omolola Odutola, said the police were not involved in the matter. When contacted for a reaction to the allegation of threat, the Special Adviser to the Ogun State Governor on Media and Strategy, Kayode Akinmade, said the administration of Governor Dapo Abiodun knew nothing about the claims of the Chinese firm and could not respond to them. Everyone is now denying that it is involved. Smh. This is preposterous! This is completely unacceptable. You inherit both the liability and assets of your predecessors. The current Governor and Ogun State Police Command should have escalated this to the FG and Nigerians instead of this kind of response after the poop has hit the ceiling fan. Everyone alleged to be involved in this national embarrassment, including the past Governors of PDP under Senator Gbenga Daniel who signed the contract and its successor APC Governor, Sen. Ibikunle Amosun should be invited for questioning and if they are indicted must all be prosecuted like the FG did in the P&ID criminal case. This is completely unacceptable if all these ill-treatment reports are true. EFCC and DSS must investigate this matter. It should not be left to the politicians. May God bless Nigeria for ever! Check my signature for free stuffs! Here’s a timeline of the events from the investment deal to the legal battles: 2001: China and Nigeria signed a bilateral investment treaty to encourage investment between the two countries. 2010: Zhongshan Fucheng Industrial Investment, through its parent company Zhuhai Zhongfu Industrial Group, acquired rights to develop the Ogun Guangdong Free Trade Zone (OGFTZ) in Ogun State, Nigeria. 2011: Zhongshan set up a local entity, Zhongfu International Investment (NIG) FZE, to manage the development of the free trade zone. The Chinese firm then carried out several works, including the development of infrastructure such as roads, sewerage and power networks, within the zone. 2012: Ogun State appointed Zhongfu as the interim manager of the OGFTZ. 2013: A joint venture agreement was signed, making Zhongfu the permanent manager of the OGFTZ and giving it a majority shareholding in the project. 2016: Ogun State abruptly terminated Zhongfu’s appointment and took actions to expel the company from Nigeria, including harassment of its executives and revocation of immigration papers. 2017: Zhongshan initiated arbitration proceedings against Nigeria, claiming breach of the bilateral investment treaty. 2021: On 26 March 2021, the tribunal, chaired by Lord Neuberger, the former president of the UK Supreme Court, ruled that Nigeria breached its obligations under the China-Nigeria BIT and issuing a final award of $55,675,000 in addition to an interest of $9.4 million and costs of £2,864,445 payable by Nigeria to Zhongshan. The total amount is about $70 million. All efforts by the federal government to amicably resolve the dispute between Ogun State and the Chinese firm were fruitless. 2023: Nigeria sought state immunity in a legal case but was denied by the High Court in the UK, which ruled that the country had exceeded the time limit for appealing arbitral awards. In July 2023, the UK Court of Appeal upheld a $70 million arbitration award against Nigeria. As part of its efforts to recover the funds, the company secured interim charging orders over the two Liverpool properties owned by the Nigerian government in June and August 2022. 2024: The United States Court of Appeals for the District of Columbia affirmed the enforceability of the arbitration award. Nigeria challenged the enforcement but the court held that it had the jurisdiction to enforce the arbitral award under the US Foreign Sovereign Immunities Act. August 2024: Nigerian jets were seized in France as part of efforts to enforce the arbitration award against Nigeria.

I thought you people said the presidential jet has immunity n nobody can seize it, it seems sense has finally hit you after the empty chest beating. You said BAT didn't cause this problem, true I agree. But what you will also have to agree is that this is 100% BAT's responsibility. If you claim that this problem is not part of Tinubu's liabilities , then explain why three of his jets were collected? You people have bastardized this country, imagine the international shame n the security threat of having your presidential jet under d lock n key of a foreign entity. It means that they can plant bugs in that jet n listen to every single conversation d president is having. They can even plant bomb inside sef...remind me again how Palestine leader was killed in Iran. As a president, when you agree to take over an entity, both d assets n liabilities are yours. When Todd Boehly bought Chelsea from Abramovich, he did not say he will only buy d good players n that Abramovich shd keep d dead players...he bought both d good n bad. Any sensible person would hire mad corporate lawyers n instruct them to find out all the assets n liabilities of the position he is going to inherit. That BAT's team didn't do their job of this, couldn't possibly be d problem of Zhongshan. To be fair to BAT, he is not a lawyer n wouldn't have known about all these deals n how the China-Nigeria Bilateral relationship ties him to the liabilities of his state governments. But like I said, BAT didn't cause d problem but BAT is 100% responsible for the fallout. This attempt of dissociating him from this saga is an argument you use to confuse d illiterates. |

Augustine2244:It was a PDP Governor who signed the contract just like the P&ID criminal case. It is always PDP and that's why we will never reward PDP or its low-budget version, ElluPee, with the Presidency. |

Nigeria Leaders you see lives! ![]() Borrowing upandan without the slightest clue of how to pay back...... Buhari Mortgaged our crude for loans that we still can't trace the projects they were utilized on, today we don't have enough crude to give Dangote and other indigenous refiners Yesterday I read that the FG is eyeing another $500m. It's well.... |

FreeStuffsNG:You are just a joking the same way the current governor inherited both the asset n liabilities of Ogun State is the exact way the Tinubu inherited both the asset and liabilities of a Nigeria. You cannot separate BAT from this one, but you are free to continue your word play, after all no be him Jet dem collect? That BAT n his team didn't do their homework to figure out these types of liabilities couldn't possibly be d headache of Zhongshan. I guess everyone was busy eyeing all d juicy assets like the oil flowing out of Niger Delta, the palatial residence in aso rock, d S-Class Mercedes, n all d appointments, no one paid attention to the debts. I assure you more of this will still come up with the mindless borrowing. Just one company in China, dragging the whole nation into international embarrassment. |

International embarrassment of the highest order. It is strange that Nigeria's Policemen could assault foreigners who they usually worship. May be they were acting on orders ' from above'. |

It was signed by the then PDP governor Gbenga Daniel. However, government is continuum. The present governor is supposed to pursue the case to a logical conclusion instead of adopting I-don't-care attitude. |

The completely worthless and brainless Ogun state government signed a contract with their two eyes wide opened that significantly favored the firm and thought they could use force (in the Nigeria way) to overrule it like the useless batidiot in power. Utter fools voted in by even bigger fools. Couldn't even get proper lawyers to go through it and negotiate better terms. Na thuggery and skull mining there Sabi. It amazes me how Bitter grievingory Obi and his embittered people have turned this issue. Those unpatriotic elements mock Nigeria up and down with their stupidity, rejoicing their their foolery, rejoicing in challenges of Nigeria, and anguish at her progress, those despicable rogues doesn't know they are destroying themselves, and ask those pathological criminals, they want bitter grievingory Obi to rule the Nigeria they are dragging the mud
