Buju Banton: 'I Am Igbo' - Jamaican Reggae Icon Reveals by Noneroone(op): 6:33pm On Aug 18, 2024
Jamaican reggae icon Buju Banton has revealed that he has Igbo heritage, tracing his roots to the Igbo tribe of Nigeria.

During a recent appearance on the popular Drink Champs podcast, co-hosted by N.O.R.E and DJ EFN, Banton discussed his cultural lineage, stating that his tribe, the Maroons, originated from the Igbo people.

Banton expressed deep concern over the current situation in Jamaica, where he claims that the Indigenous Maroon lands are under threat.

According to the reggae legend, the Jamaican government is allowing Chinese and other foreign entities into their region, leading to the displacement of the Maroon community.

Buju Banton said, “Our Indigenous way of life and our land are being threatened by the current government of Jamaica which seeks to bring Chinese and other nationalities into the Cockpit region which is an Indigenous sacred region to usurp us the Maroons as the warriors.

“Maroons are some of the Indigenous warriors on my Island. We fought the British relentlessly. We are called Blackmaroons. My generation originated from Nigeria. I am an Igbo man according to my bloodline.”

How is this news?. Buju dey enter Nigeria wella dey vibe at Fela shrine. In fact, he is Nigerian first before jamaican, he spends most of his time here. He literally grew up in Fela's house horning his skills as a young guy. His cousin, Nneka also a raggae artists. These guys sing and promote their songs in nigeria. They live mostly in Nigeria.

It is a symbol of Slavery. Even the word Igbo means slave and slaves are known to always fight for 'freedom'.

Reminds me of one of Peter Tosh's songs...

No matter where you come from
As long as you're a Blackman
You're an African.

There was this hit song of his in the 1990s.

Part of the lyrics was "boom bye bye inna batty bwoy head"

The song did very well in Britain, until the lyrics was translated.

It basically means kill homosexuals.

Following the revelation, the song took a bit hit in England.

Although a look at him might suggest a Mali-Senegalese African.

Buju Banton!!

Maximum respect!

Cheers to the Igbos!

But someone answering Chibuike from Gowon creation called south south (something that doesn't exist in geographical point ) will claim he's not Igbos because he wants some people to love them which Will never happen.

I don't have problem with them, the only problem I have with them is them answering Igbo names and speaking Igbo.
When they commit something, children of hate won't check if he's not Igbos provided they have seen Igbo name.

I am begging those that are not Igbo to please corrupt their name to distinguish them from Igbos they are not.
The Igbo language you speak, try change it or corrupt it to sound different from the great Igbo language.
Adding R or removing one letter is not enough.

Those that are Igbos in Gowon creation are always welcome anytime and any day.
Igbo is one , nothing like Delta Igbo,or Anambra Igbo, Ebonyi Igbo,it's Igbo.

Our brother from Jamaica, you are welcome.

God bless Umu Igbo Nile anywhere they are in the world.

Yes, he fled from the British-led war and incursion into his land. Rightfully so.

Others were just tools inculding your tribe.. Go and read the Biafra: Britain's shame by Auberon Waugh, if you are in doubt..

To the most high, you know

I am living while I'm living to the father I will pray
Only he knows how we get through every day
With all the hike in the price, arm and leg we have to pay
While our leaders play

All I see is people ripping and robbing and grabbing
Thief never love to see a thief with a long bag
No love for the people who are suffering real bad
Another toll to the poll may God help we soul

What is to stop the youths from getting out of control
Filled up with education yet don't own a payroll
The clothes on my back has countless eye holes
Could go on and on and full has never been told

In these times I say, when mama spend her last to send you to class
