Yes the Only empire the Yoruba race have a pact with is England... and we don't hide it.

Our first campaigns against the English navy was very successful until the English went to regroup.
Thanks to our oba of lagos for his wisdom.he saved his people. Never allow pride to get the best of you . Yorubas remains the greatest and the most civillised tribe in black Africa

We need the source for this letter.
Secondly the letter is unsigned
Thirdly, there is nothing like King of Yoruba especially as an Alafin.
Fourthly, the English is too modern for 1881.

I suspect that this letter is fake

Agreed without conceding that the letter is genuine, I respect Alafin to know his limitations at war and sought for help rather than allowing over 3million of his people to perish. Sense prevailed over arrogance.

So at 1881, they were sophisticated in the Western area to write like this

They were being ruled by Elite Kings then?

Now I know where all these Excellence comes from

This still reflects in the region till today

Diplomacy over every sense arrogance that can lead to stupid killings. Even past Isreal and Judah kings of the bible did this

Things like this isnt even unheard of in history. Every lovers and readers of history should be familiar with this kinda letters. It fosters relationships between kingdoms and their alliance make them harder to break

Aside not being able to verify this, assuming its true, I'm proud of the Alaafin. He took same initiatives like all powerful kings of the Earth before him

Guess the Yorubas have a lil more documented history than most around them, maybe bar the Hausa and Fulani

Yes of course

Have you not heard of Samuel Johnson and his brother another Johnson that wrote Yoruba History, he was a correspondence between Yoruba Kings and governors or England, like he helped them write and pass letters, Samuel Ajayi Crowther too

Those were elites of that time among others...

Good post.

I deleted the parts of your post that were not necessary as the letter is fake.

However the English part is also a good sign as not only is the English too modern, the standard is actually quite poor and again if they bothered with History (or even a simple KJV Bible), they would know there was no way the standard would be this low...especially if it was written by someone trained by missionaries.

Ordinary to mimic their great great great grandfathers is difficult for GenZs of nowadays.....man this generation is truly dull.

have you read older letters dated before 1881...that english is not too modern...secondly he was the alaafin of oyo and leader of Yoruba land then. So he was recognized as the leader of the yoruba people by the british, it does mean there were no kings of other yoruba towns.
Ģo and read the treaty between the alafin of Oyo and the Queen Victoria of England.

These Jungle people that their brain were not even developed enough to build an empire are always looking for a way to mock Yoruba

Same Dahomey that was under Oyo Empire for many years.

You Igbo don't understand warfare, War is not always about chest beating and making noise or just being brave, war is more complex than that. Reason why Ojuwku wasted 3 million Igbo and ran away.

Even if the letter was real, the British have better weapons than Yoruba at the time and Yoruba were wise enough to recognize that, everything is not always nsogbu nsogbu like barbarians, just like Israel have USA support and Ukraine have USA support.

If tomorrow prime minister of Israel ask for USA help against Iran does that now mean Isreali are cowards or can't fight ? no but in war you utilize all the advantages you have including your allies to crush your enemies.

President of Ukraine is always asking for USA help against Russia, does that now mean Ukraine people are weak or cowards? No, are they not the one now invading Russia with the help of USA ?

If tomorrow USA want to go to war against China, they will call for support from NATO and other allies, does that now mean USA is weak ?

War is more complex than how you Igbo usually portray it, it is not all about just being brave or loud. There was a reason Yoruba had an empire and like every empire in the world they always have their rise and fall like the Roman empire, British empire, Mongol Empire etc it doesn't mean they weren't great.

With these mentality from you Igbo if you start another war again you will lose badly again, your brain is just too low for warfare, to your brain if one opponent retreat one time or call for support then he already lose and he must be weak, there's something call stooping low to conquer.

Because the Yoruba king at the time utilize all the advantages they have instead of being arrogant and brain dead, Dahomey did not take over south west Nigeria and they also failed to take over Abeokuta in Ogun state, because of the knowledge of Yoruba forefathers Fulani didn't cross Ilorin and take over south west like they took over Hausa Land.

Nigeria is now a country we can not just declare all out war on another tribe but if Nigeria ever descend into war again, you will know the true Yoruba.

There is NO title such as Alafin of Oyo, King of Yorubaland. Never. The letter was supposedly written by Alafin but no signature
Even if that's true, it means diplomacy at its peak.

So why were you begging the British to save your lives?

Secondly, how were you able to campaign against the British Navy which had frigates and 88 millimeter canon guns with ordinary canoes?

No the letter is not fake. It is included in the "History of the Yorubas" which was completed by Samuel Johnson in 1897 although it was not published until 1921. Samuel Johnson, by the way, witnessed the unrest in Yorubaland in the latter part of the 19th century and was a key person in negotiating peace at the end of the Kiriji Wars. So he was a witness to all these events.

"King of Yoruba" at the time simply means "King of Oyo". Don't read too much into it. "Yoruba" was more or less synonymous with "Oyo" until Bishop Ajayi Crowther began to promote the use of the term to include all Yoruba-speaking groups. That was why a nineteenth-century newspaper was called "iwe iro in fun awon ara Egba ati Yoruba" - newspaper for the Egba and the Yoruba. A name that suggests that Egba were at the time non-Yoruba in the way they identify.

About signatures, Alaafin Adeyemi was illiterate. His letters were written for him by a secretary who at the time was usually a Sierra Leonean returnee. As a result his early letters were usually unsigned. But some of the latter letters he wrote, from the 1890s were marked with an "X" to stand in place of a signature.

The English is too modern for 1881? How do you think people were speaking and writing in 1881? Were you expecting to see "thou" and "comest" and "thee"? Read books that were writren about that same period by people like Ajayi Crowther and explorers like Mockler-Ferryman and Harry Johnston, and then come back and talk about the English sounding too modern.
