Nigeria’s government is looking to tap into the potential of the booming cryptocurrency industry by introducing new tax regulations.

The Federal Inland Revenue Service (FIRS) is spearheading this effort, signalling a shift towards more formalized oversight of the digital asset space.

This move comes as the country seeks to harness the economic benefits of the rapidly growing crypto market, estimated to be worth over $400 million.

FIRS Executive Chairman Zacch Adedeji revealed plans for the new tax legislation during discussions with the National Assembly’s Finance Committees.

He highlighted the need for Nigeria’s regulatory framework to evolve in line with new technologies, ensuring that innovation in the crypto sector can contribute to the nation’s economic growth.

“We need laws that reflect the current realities of our economy,” Adedeji stated, underscoring the importance of crafting regulations that support, rather than stifle, economic development.

For years, industry experts have advocated for a balanced approach to crypto regulation in Nigeria.

The government’s earlier stance, which included a 2021 ban on financial institutions engaging with crypto businesses, sparked debates on the best way forward.

Many argued that rather than prohibiting crypto activities, Nigeria should focus on leveraging taxation to benefit from the sector’s expansion.

One such voice was university professor Tayo Oyedeji, who suggested that Nigeria could significantly boost its revenue by taxing crypto gains.

The Nigerian Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) has also been urged to provide clear regulatory guidelines for the crypto industry.

Finance Minister Wale Edun recently called on the SEC to prioritize regulatory clarity to protect investors while fostering innovation.

This comes amid a broader crackdown on crypto platforms in Nigeria, with global giants like OKX withdrawing from the market and Binance facing legal challenges over allegations of money laundering and tax evasion.

The proposed tax legislation is a crucial step in integrating the crypto sector into Nigeria’s formal economy. While some crypto platforms have already started collecting Value-Added Tax (VAT) on transaction fees, such as KuCoin’s 7.5% VAT introduced in July, the new law aims to provide a comprehensive framework for taxing the industry.
