This might be one of the few anime I would watch first in English dub to be honest.

Saw the trailer in both Japanese and English...
And LOTR just feels much better in English

"Inshallah a boy" (2023)

One Sharia Law for men....A totally different one for women......

This compelling flick totally mirrors, an average Asghar Farhadi's feature....high octane Arabian family drama and you'd be forgiven if you thought this was one of his films, because of how good this was...

Amjad Al Rasheed's debut directorial film delves into sociatal pressures and gender expectations of a muslim woman in patriarchal society vested on the fringes of the Sharia law, where the birth of a male child is seen as a measure of a women's worth.

The film centers on Nawal, a widow whose life takes a drastic turn after the sudden death of her husband. The plot intensifies when Nawal realizes that without a male heir, her late husband's family has the legal right to claim her home, leaving her and her daughter homeless.

The story unravels as Nawal grapples with the harsh realities of a legal system and culture that place the burden of producing a male child on her shoulders. The film is marked by outstanding performances, particularly from the lead actress, who brings a deep emotional resonance to her role.

The cinematography is beautifully crafted, capturing the stark contrasts between the intimate spaces of Nawal’s home and the imposing legal and societal structures that threaten her. The use of light and shadow, along with the film's pacing, creates a tense atmosphere that keeps viewers engaged.

"Inshallah a Boy" does more than just tell a story; it opens up a conversation about gender inequality, inheritance laws, and the often overlooked struggles of women in the Arab world. It’s a film that resonates on many levels, offering both a critical lens on societal norms and a moving portrayal of a woman’s fight for her rights and dignity especially in a religion that seemly embodies men to stifle women's right, as they blindly believe that's how a woman should be and that's how she remains "pure".

The title isn't by chance or to serve as a satire, it captures the entire mood of the film...."Inshallah a boy"...... literally translates to "By God's grace, A boy"....a plea by the main character to God for a boy.....A boy that makes her a "Woman"....

Top tier film

8/10.

@ the bold, from the start, men are not equal to women in Islam.

Im more inclined that the movie is based on the Arab traditions/customs

Being only a female child in Islam, you inherit half of each of your parents wealth/legacy.

Condition that One must have a male child is never shari'a law

Glen Powell.....the man of the hour.
abduleez1:
Not really bruh.

TWISTERS is overperforming and the two animation films of the summer are still legging superbly all week long.
Yet another example of "hyping the hype" shalaye.

Twisters 2024 is not exactly a financial success. Twisters needed to make a minimum of $400 million. It made only $338 million, approximately.

Twisters was only a hit in America. Globally, it didnt make up to $100 million.

Typical shalaye masters of Nairaland will be hyping a movie because many websites are hyping it.

Lol, na everybody be man/woman of the hour for abduleez1 eyes even when Margot Robbie was having flops back to back before Barbie saved her from being labelled "box office poison", she was still woman of the hour. It's really funny how people think "starpower" in this day and age is working when most of the time, the marketing is the main star

It is totally possible to criticise something you haven't seen. It's like saying 'I can't criticise Cuties because I haven't seen it, that's bollocks to me! You don't have to watch child porn before you criticise it. If people had told him already what's going on in the show, he has every right to criticise without watching
I want to believe you're confusing criticism with reactions. You can react to something you haven't consumed. You can't criticize it. And it's absolutely hilarious how the Cuties you used as an example is a great example of why you can't/shouldn't criticize something you haven't consumed.

Like, perfectly written irony

Saltburn......9.5/10

It's a pretty dark movie. Some comedy was thrown in. An erotic thriller of some sort with some fine bit of sexual depravity sprinkled in. Chronicles the lengths an opportunistic gold-digger would go to set his future up in riches. Pretty wild how the ending went. Not so surprised as I guessed it but shït was still brutal, gritty, dark and shocking still. Quite a fvvking effect.

Might be offensive if not overly for peeps with a lower tolerance for the LGTV community for of course it's filled with homoerotiç themes or undertones.
But I won't deny it's a darn good movie towing the fine line between edgy and offensive. So it surely has controversial themes. And of course the most pressing annoyance being a film that might come off as "painting the rich and opulent in bad light".

Barry Keoghan, what can I say? I always doubted the guy and thought he was overrated especially with last year's Oscars nomination. But my God, was I wrong? Barry shocked me on this and I didn't knew he had it in him. This is definitely deserved of a Best Actor nomination. Damn, bro. Gotta give it to this guy. He killed his role. Barry put on a mighty show. I ain't slandering this guy henceforth.

And Fennel got her entire cast right. They all put in a mighty darn good performance. Especially Jacob Elordi who I ain't surprised by his talent or craft. He's good and I've wanted his rise in the industry and it seems 2023 was a mighty fruitful year for him. Rosamund Pike is sure to deliver memorable performance as always. The few times Richard Grant and Carey Mulligan was onscreen they delivered. Archie Madekwe was also a scene stealer. Because of this, I'll just try and see his film "Gran Turismo". Holds so much promise.

Very good cinematography and top tier music score which drives each scene with to give you the perfect emotion. Well written, well paced. Seemed as if it ain't sure or going nowhere at the middle but the third act was a huge pay off.

This movie also goes on as a strong competitor for Best Original Screenplay if it manages not to nick Best Picture noms. Screenplay is also a strong point for Fennel.

Always knew I was gonna enjoy this movie just from five trailer alone and the assurance from a film written and directed by Emerald Fennel. It's definitely the best movie I've seen this year and a great way to open my film watching this year.

Many have said it's very similar to "The Talented Mr Ripley" and I'm definitely downloading this movie tonight just to compare and contrast how big of an inspiration and how good or novel Emerald Fennel did with her work.
Just what I thought when I saw the film yesternight.

Infact, it's this movie that will make me go see The Talented Mr Ripley.

😂 you're getting it all wrong. I never said the Drinker 'criticized' the series - he didn't: if you actually watched the video, he actually 'reacted' to the backlash it was getting as a 'I told you so' video

I said this months before the movie came out, it was definitely inspired by "The talented Mr Ripley" or like I said, it's "The talented Mr Ripley" of this generation. Instead of watching that, watch Netflix's Ripley instead, it's really good and much more closer to the books as it wasn't rushed like the movie

Finally watched this trailer and I need the same people hating on The Rings of Power to keep the same energy here because Rings of Power did a better job capturing the feel of Middle-Earth and a bit of Tolkien than this.
Nothing about this trailer gives off a Middle-Earth or Tolkien vibe, as good and interesting as the movie itself looks.

Yeah, I'm hardly feeling Middle Earth vibes in it but the storyline looks interesting.

Lol, there's already hate on it on social media with many people angered by the female character Hera gaining prominence in this story.
