What You Never Knew About Nigeria Airways.

By July 1980, the fleet consisted of 26 aircraft, split into three Boeing 707-320Cs, two Boeing 727-200s, two Boeing 737-200s, two DC-10-30s, two F27-200s, two F27-400Ms, four F27-600s, six F28-2000s, two F28-4000s, and one Aztec.

Nigeria Airways became Airbus’ 40th customer in 1981, when it placed an order for four Airbus A310-200s; these aircraft were incorporated into the fleet in late 1984 and early 1985.

Also in 1981, four new Boeing 737-200s were ordered to replace leased aircraft of the same type in a deal worth US$65,000,000 ($168,614,568 in 2015); they were delivered in February 1983.

In 1982, a Boeing 747 was leased from Scanair; the aircraft was deployed on services to the United Kingdom, permitting the DC-10s to be used on new routes to Frankfurt, Paris, and Zurich.

OKADA Air is Nigeria's first private airline (1983-1997), owned by Sir Chief Gabriel Igbinedion, the Esama of Benin Kingdom. The airline began charter operations in September 1983, featuring the Queen Idia mask as its official logo. Okada Air operated in 9 local airports in Nigeria.

During its operation, Okada Air was one of the largest independent airlines in Africa. In 1992, Okada Air was granted the right to operate international flights. At one point, it operated the Boeing 747-100 on ad-hoc charter flights across the globe, including flights across the Pacific Ocean.

They also transported pilgrims to the Holy Lands every year. Although the airline expanded its operations, it was eventually disestablished in 1997.

To think that these ones used to be the carriers of choice in the prime of their time, but have now gone into extinction shows how managerial culture is dead in Nigeria

In a country where there are no consequences for wrong doing in public office that is what you get. Imagine Amosun an FCA spewing irresponsibly over the document he signed without first repudiating a previous one. he still struts about shamelessly with the ridiculously tall cap he wears.

I usually take brt bus everyday going home from work from Sabo Yaba to Ikotun. For good three weeks the driver said he has been complaining to the authority that he’s two tires are not good and he’s managing it like that. We lack continuity and maintenance. Corruption would not allow us maintain what we have.

For those with a good knowledge of the aviation industry,those fleet of aircratfs mentioned above is NO small feat for a Nigerian airline way back then. Just imagine they were managed well and grew to have modern aircrafts now, Nigeria Airways would have been an airline to reckon with!!

Same way Virgin Nigeria (later Air Nigeria) which was doing perfectly well before evil jimoh Ibrahim came and ran it down.

Same way Discovery Airways would have blossomed by now, BUT this is Nigeria!!

Azman air is going gradually

Azman Air case is actually a sad one cos the owner is into oil biz which could sustain the running of the airline! But he crowded the place with inefficient staff with poor management skills and all.

Hoping RANO Air would grow to dominate the northern route
