Passport Fee Hike Won’t Stop Japa – Ex-Envoys by adenigga(op): 5:44am On Aug 25, 2024
Nigerian ambassadors have said the new upward review of the fees for Nigerian passports would not reduce the japa syndrome but rather worsen the hardship afflicting the people.

The Nigeria Immigration Service recently announced that a 100 per cent price increment for the passport would begin on September 1, 2024 to ensure the quality and integrity of the Nigerian Standard Passport system.

The NIS said a 32-page passport booklet with five-year validity previously charged at N35,000 has increased to N50,000, while a 64-page passport booklet with 10-year validity which was N70,000 will be N100,000.

But speaking with Sunday PUNCH, a former ambassador to the Philippines, Yemi Farounbi, explained that although the increment might be necessary given the upsurge in inflation rate, the move would only worsen the hardship in the country.

The former ambassador said, “There is nothing whose price has not gone up in the last one year. Unfortunately, the poor people are the carriers of this burden so rather than ease the burden on the common man or the average Nigerian, we have only added to it. Increasing the cost of passports by almost 100 per cent or thereabouts will not discourage those who want to leave because they are being pulled by stronger forces than the cost of passports.”

Also speaking, a former Nigeria Consul to Cameroon, Rasheed Akinkuolie, noted that there were important issues the government should concentrate on rather than increasing the passport fees as more people were currently suffering from insecurity and the high inflation rate affecting prices of items.

A government with no knowledge of tackling the root of the mess in the country think imposing tariff or hicking prices will deter the people from japa.

The definition of failure is APC just like the definition of corruption is NNPCL.

Couldn't he have faked them too?
Re: Passport Fee Hike Won’t Stop Japa – Ex-Envoys by ecolime(m):
This is a very dumb news

If you can pay for expensive Airfares, school fees, upfront house rents, insurance, etc. then passport fee increment is definitely not a problem.

Raising money by milking the populace anyhow possible is the main motivation for the increase and has nothing to do with stopping of Japa.

Instead of us to critic crazy extortionists policies, we always choose to discuss unnecessary distractions.

As a matter of fact, it's more like petrol on the fire of the Japa syndrome undecided

I am still saying it, the best thing you can do for yourself and children wether born or unborn is to Japa from Nigeria. Time will come to travel out will be a big problem..

I'll rather die than raised my children in Nigeria. All the suffering I'm going through today is for them not to suffer. JAPA if you can.

When did Tinubu tell them it was to stop japa, and not simply to raise revenue for him and his cronies to loot, as they have been doing in Lagos for over 25 years huh

Wicked, humane endangering set of people

You are hiking passport fee, for no other reason than to enrich themselves more

The more money made from this hike, the more funds for them to embezzle

All agency of the govt has been turn into revenue generating venture

This former ambassador was so dull.

How could Government stop Japa by increasing the cost of passport to 50k and 100k depending on the number of pages?. Nigerians will pay any amount to get out of the country. Does he even know the millions Nigerians pay to the so called visa agent?

So, is it increment of less than 30k that will stop Nigerians from immigrating?

He’s just sounding politically correct.

I no understand you, I renewed my passport this year around March. I did it myself just going through the procedure listed by the immigration services (NIS) and I got my passport reproduced within 6 to 8 weeks though on their website it's 6 weeks. I payed a total of 73 thousand naira, 70k was for the 10yr validity fee while the rest was ATM charges

It's easier now, I have been patronizing those crooks from NIS for a long time but decided this time I won't give any one a dime

Some of you think having a passport means relocating from Nigeria, if you are a serious professional you will have your passport ready at all times because duty can take you out of your vicinity with little notice time.
