My jaw nearly hit the floor! I didn't intend to post anything on this thread until I saw the massive historical errors in your post.

I have to CORRECT you here on your very misleading post so as to prevent others from following your WRONG account of history. The picture you attached to your post is NOT the TYPICAL setup of a "wealthy man's living room in the 1980s or even the 1990."

For your information, wealthy people in the 1970s, 1980s and 1990s either in Nigeria and around the world lived a life of luxury [with pure leather seats, aquariums, marble flooring, silk throw pillows, antique furniture, real wall paintings bought from exhibitions, chandeliers in the dining and all rooms, Persian rugs, well-stocked home libraries with volumes of the iconic Encyclopedia Britannica, etc] NOT this LOWER-INCOME living room setup you posted here. I say this as a man who is a Gen X, who was alive in those decades you mentioned (the 1980s and the 1990s).

Some of you younger ones erroneously think the upscale life we have right now started when you were born 25 years ago or during the social media age or something... That's NOT the case. It's been on at least since the modern Victorian era of the 1800s among the wealthy and upper-class.

ThierryJay:
OP where is the apoti fedeko of the 80s and early 90s? What's plasma tv doing there?

In a rich man's house then, you'd see a lot of quality carved decor and spacious living rooms with luxurious wavy settees, aquarium and the likes. No landline telephone, no bookshelf in your picture and you say it's a rich man's house. Doesn't look like it at all.
Leave the OP, he never lived in or entered a rich/wealthy man's house back then.

But your church's property...how much is it worth?
There is nothing wrong with building a mansion as long as it does not become an idol in your life and you built it with wealth made honestly. Lest the owner becomes like the patridge that lays eggs and hatches it not.

gerizzim:
most houses had gone beyond this design by 80s and 90s.
Then I must be from a very rich family, because back then, all the neighbours we had had bigger parlours than this.
Our house, cousins, neighbours, all my friends.
Don't get me wrong. I did see THIS particular type of setup. But it was in "managing" people's houses.
Not poor, just managing.

SocialJustice:
Lol, I know rich people from that era and they did not live in this, they lived in mansions. Even saw a baby grand piano in a friend's sitting room I visited as a kid.

Rich men from this era built better mansions than rich men of today. I mean large houses not the dwarf duplexes people build today.

This is a very normal house.
You are very correct at this description.
This generation don't even know what grand piano is.
Chai, this our Naira has FALLEN BADDLY!

How many rich men in Nigeria or even Europe and North America had a computer in their home? I mean DOLLAR MILLIONAIRES. Let's not even talk of one linked to the internet?

This here is a very important economic lesson for everyone. How and why can an average person today afford something the richest people couldn't have in 1980?

Good Luck to Nigeria.

Re: 80s And 90s Wealth: The Iconic Rich Man's Parlour (Photo) by Focusmind:
Lie lie...far below the standard of Rich men of the 80s. Even a newly settled "nwaboy" in onitsha will have something finer and tusher than this in the 80s talk more of his main "oga" . The living room you have there was mostly lower class and those living on the margins.
