I am American (with a Nigerian dad) and love to travel the world. Been to many Middle Eastern and European countries but never been to Far East Asia or Eastern Europe. Now I am planning to do so....starting with China and Russia. Naturally, as an American, I am a lil apprehensive about visiting America's 2 biggest and most powerful global adversaries.
So I got questions:
1) Do anyone know how Americans are treated in China and Russia?
2) Is it advisable for an American to visit Russia and China now considering that the US is an adversary of China and Russia in the Ukraine conflict?
3) Does anyone know any Chinese speaking and Russian speaking Nigerians or Nigerian-Americans living in China and Russia that I can konnect with when I get there?

PS: I hope to be in China by end of this month.

My humble advice to you is to perish that thought. Since you are an American, avoid China, Russia, North Korea and Iran.

It is not that they will grab you immediately you land there but there could be a diplomatic wahala between America and them when you are there and they will just grab any American they see and label him a spy or national security threat in other to use you as a bargaining chip. You could be the unlucky one they catch so why take the risk?

The US government will come for you but it may take years to get you out but before then you could have chopped enough beans and beating in their hands.

Those countries don't have independent judiciary unlike the west where you can sue the government and win so it won't be about whether you are innocent or guilty.

If you must go to those countries, then drop your US passport and go as a Nigerian if you can get the visa, it is even safer for you.

As a Canadian citizen myself, I can't go to those countries even if you dash me money to go there for one day not to talk of being an American citizen which is even worse in this case. In my opinion, go to Japan and South Korea instead and have peace.

Thanks for feedback bro. I thought about going with a non-US passport. But getting a Nigerian passport ain't no easy feat. Last time i was in Nigeria, i learned I gotta get sumn called NIN and some other shid lyke dat to process a Nigerian passport. Hella hectic process. So for now, I gotta keep riding wit a US passport.

You all sound weird when you ask these kinda questions .. Do you know the n0 of Americans already in China?? Exploring without any problems? Go on Facebook and search for foreigners in China.. Don't let western media cloud your thought.

I think you are right. Looking at it critically, Chinese don't seem to target Americans for diplomatic extortion. However, US allies are mostly targets maybe they believe they are weaker. So in a way, Americans will be safer in China than citizens of US allied countries like Canada and Australia in particular.

However, the reverse is the case for Russia, North Korea and Iran. Those ones target Americans all the time. This does not mean that they hold every American that enters their country just that you could be unlucky on a day Putin is angry at America and decide to use one American as a bargaining chip to get what he wants.

American citizens have to move cautiously in periods when the US is at war in several regions of the world.
