Months ago, someone posted on Facebook that he needs a secretary. I replied him and we moved on to WhatsApp. I asked him for the salary range. But he dodged the question and ask me to come for interview. With the way the economy of this country is looking depressing, it is very vital to know the salary before spending your money on expensive transport. I didn't attend the interview cos that's a red flag. Imagine after passing the interview and the salary is made known and I am not satisfied with it, then the employer has wasted my time and my transport money.

COMRADES, the employer acted wisely, he doesn't suppose to discuss salary packages with you online as long as proximity doesn't matter |

Melagros:Slave business owner spotted. You can describe all the things you want the person to do for you but you can't tell the person what they will get in return in the same breath. Shiiooor! |

Melagros:You acknowledged it is developed. So what's your criteria of saying it's wise for the employer not to disclose salary? Because it is in 3rd world where recruiters want slaves. |

Who still does physical interviews these days? If in doubt, I think you should request for a zoom or Google meet call. |

Melagros:Lol You are capping. A business owner who can post all the requirements for a job online but can't post the salary range or structure is deceptive. Many of them who refuse to tell you salary range are slave masters. Nothing wrong in asking what you will get as a salary before spending money on transportation for a job that is not worth it. |

Melagros:Wisely? As I am very broke, I should use my scarce money to pay for transport to go for the interview. After the interview and the salary can't pay for my transport, will the employer refund me? |

Be upfront about it. It is not a crime, unless you are sure the company pays very well. |

detopea1:You better be careful with Facebook, many scammers are on that platform and many kidnappers are there also... Be careful about who you tangle yourself with on that platform. I don't really use it like before. |

Majorly non professional jobs hide their salary. In the health sector here in Nigeria however, employers know that if they don't put salary range no one will call them. We have been slaves for too long. |

Someone asked me that too. I simply told him it depends on a lot of factors and isn't within my purview as a recruitment rep to disclose. I feel it's a bit awkward to prioritise salary before your ambitions of working at such a place in a corporate world. One even said 'let me know if I can risk coming'. Strange. Sharing a range before knowing the ability/value of a potential employee can attract ugly eggs and potentially keep away the valuable ones. You can peg a salary at an amount, but be willing to increase it for those whose value are worth it. You can also peg it at too high to get the great hands, and end up inflating job market needlessly. |

Melagros:Africans are really wicked. Why is it that if you check for jobs abroad, they will even tell you the annual pay? Must we hide vital information in Africa? |

SocialJustice:No professional HR practitioner worth his onions will discuss salary with you on the very first discussion on the phone. It is only desperate candidates that seek to know salary range and that's why they get short-changed. Your best bet is to have an in-depth discussion with the potential employee with a view to understanding what value he can actually bring to the organisation before the negotiation starts. Salaries and by extension rewards are very relative and even a range can be broken in favour of a really good candidate who knows his worth and is able to convey same. |

Well just have a mind of self employment. You already know things are bad in the country so don't expect magic relief from the employer. If you can go, you go. If you cannot, just go and start your own business. |

Melagros:This is a dim-witted take. In most places it is canon to provide a salary range when putting up a job posting. |

detopea1:please feel free to sit at home. no one is going to discuss salary with you without accessing you first. if you were a high value candidate , people would be calling you. you are asking for a low qualification, entry level job - and you have delusions of importance sit your arse at home |

Knowing the salary range ahead of applying is the best thing to do. I don't apply for a job if I don't have an idea of the pay structure of the company. I consider companies that hide such information as unreliable or unserious. |

If you no post salary, me go ask. I won't leave my house without knowing what I am going into. |

Melagros:unless you are applying for internship, it is a big plus to ask about the compensation in the first round of interview. I usually ask for the salary range for the position, a solid company will tell you the salary for that position and that is the best. Bad companies only raises salary when they want to recruit a new person. Such companies won't give you a raise until you threaten to resign. As a professional, I ask for the salary range, and if it falls within my expectation, I will proceed with the interview. If it is a naija company, I will tell exactly what I want to earn, which usually is higher than their budget ![]() |
