1. ASUO which means Academy Senior Under Officer - This is the most senior cadet appointment given to a cadet with remarkable and outstanding performances in the Academy. ( with Academy crest, 3 yellow bars on red shoulder badge)

2. ACA which means Academy Cadet Adjutant - This is the second most senior appointment given to a cadet with excellent performance in academics, good behaviors and outstanding good records. ( with Academy crest, 3 yellow bars on black shoulder badge)

3. BSUO which means Battalion Senior Under Officer - This appointment is given to good excellent performances too. ( with Academy crest, 2 yellow bars on red shoulder badge)

4. CSUO which means Company Senior Under Officer ( with Academy crest, 1 yellow bar on red shoulder badge)

5. SUO which means Senior Under Officer ( Academy crest on red shoulder badge)

6. Cadet Sergeant Major ( eagle on red circle)

7. Cadet Sergeant ( with 3 yellow bars only)

8. Cadet Corporal( with 2 yellow bars only)

9. Cadet lance corporal ( with 1 yellow bar only.

NDA Cadets do not have ranks but they do hold appointments. However, not everyone gets an appointment. You need to be good at academics, sports, physicals and various other factors to get appointments.

Let us understand NDA’s structure. NDA has 5 battalions and 18 squadrons. First 4 battalions have 4 squadrons each. 5th Battalion has 2 squadrons. The illustration below will help us understand this better -

It is understandable NDA Cadets hold appointments but I think they still have ranks e.g. termer 1, 2, 3....and 5. which are represented by the horizontal yellow bars/stripes on their shoulders( where their commission peeps ranks would eventually be).

Meanwhile, these appointments were made based on the cadets distinguishing themselves in various aspects of military, academic and social discipline and marksmanship. They are more of honorary appointments that outright military ranking. I don't know if the same applied to the Nigerian Military School( NMS ) Zaria Kaduna.
