A Sad Story I Heard

During times of high demand for day-old chicks, people are desperate to buy from anyone, even from those they wouldn’t normally trust. Many factors contribute to this—primarily the need to meet specific times and seasons. Some might wonder why those who got scammed didn’t have a permanent supplier before. The truth is, during the broiler season, even regular marketers might struggle to get birds from the same hatchery that has supplied them for years. In the off-season, farmers can walk into any hatchery and purchase their birds, but this is not always the case when broilers are in high demand.
Take the case of a farmer who contacted a supposed day-old chick seller. The buyer paid for 10,000 broilers, but instead of sending the correct order, the seller, out of greed, sent half broilers (5,000) and half white cockerels. This happened because of the seller’s greed, but it’s important to note that buyers also need to be cautious. If you don’t give anyone the opportunity to cheat you, they won’t be able to.

A Case Study

On August 29, 2024, AGRITED quoted ₦860 per broiler, plus ₦5 for vaccination, totaling ₦865 per chick. By the time these birds reach our office in Oluyole Market, we may record one or two mortalities. Customers don’t want to hear about these losses; they expect a complete order, which adds to the cost. This is one reason prices might vary.
However, it would be a mistake if a customer calls me and, after hearing the price, asks if I can sell at the exact price AGRITED quoted. If I were desperate, I might agree and then rebrand lower-quality broilers in AGRITED cartons, a practice I believe many sellers engage in. But I can’t do that because of my years of experience and the reputation I’m building online. No matter how smart you think you are in cheating, it will eventually backfire.

My advice is simple: stop playing yourself. No one is running a charity here; the goal of business is to make a profit. It’s unrealistic to expect the same price as the hatchery during peak seasons when marketers struggle to sell their products.
