The arrest of President of the Nigerian Labour Congress (NLC) Mr. Joe Ajaero by the Department of State Services (DSS) at the Nnamdi Azikiwe International Airport, Abuja has sparked a lot of discuss across the media space. While some argue that the arrest is a blatant violation of his rights, others believe that lawful arrests is a legal tool in security operations and necessary to uphold law and order. On its part, the DSS has stated that Ajaero failed to honour its invitation and could therefore not be allowed to leave the country when he was the subject of a major investigation. The agency contended that failure to make himself available voluntarily for an interview despite repeated invitations, raised serious concerns about the nature of his involvement in ongoing investigations. Therefore his attempt to leave the country was rightly viewed as an attempt to evade lawful investigation. We must understand that security is a collective responsibility between the citizens and security organisations, and cooperation with law enforcement agencies is a key principle of maintaining a safe society. This requires that individuals comply with lawful requests and invitations as failure to do so can undermine the effectiveness of law enforcement efforts and potentially jeopardize public safety. This position is valid for every citizen irrespective of the position they hold in society. In fact, cooperation with security agencies is particularly important for individuals who hold positions of influence and authority as they set examples for others who look up to them. The public should understand that the DSS has a duty to protect national security and public safety. This responsibility may involve investigating potential threats to the state or society at large including those involving high profile individuals like the NLC president. What is important is that these actions are taken with utmost professionalism and respect for the rule of law. Thus far, the new man at the helm of the DSS, Mr. Oluwatosin Ajayi has pledged his commitment to ensuring professionalism and retuning the agency to its core mandate. The prompt release of Mr. Ajaero on bail by the agency suggests that the new DG may be reforming the secret police and its operations. This is in contrast with what was obtained in the past where suspects are held for long without bail or charged to court. While there is need to protect human rights and democratic freedom, maintaining law and order as well as the security of the citizens is equally very important. The new DSS DG appears to be striking the balance between these competing interests, with the handling of the arrest of the labour leader. We can only pray that things continue to get better in the coming days. by Maxwell Ozigbo https://www.facebook.com/share/p/Qj1q14nbv54KVw6o/ |

If they like, they can keep Ajero for six hundred years. The man could not negotiate a living wake for workers or its implementation but jetting out to enjoy himself in London. DSS do your work. silica: |

Although the secret police did well this time, I wish they continue to respect the rule of law by promptly parading people to court on time. |

What the DSS did was a display of professionalism. in fact, if they (the DSS) had allowed Ajaero to escape, they would have been unprofessional in discharging their duty. recall that he also failed to honor the Police invitation until the IGP issued arrest warrant. No country can condone this act of disrespect. Ajaero should respect himself. silica: |

silica:See eh, we have a foundamental problem in this country, the citizen are angry with president Tinubu because of his economic policy, therefore every acrion of govt forces will be used againt the president. But me personally I do not see problem with arresting anybody as long as he/she will be given fair hearing. |
