Since the start of 2024, 7,663 suspected cases of cholera and 216 fatalities have been reported nationwide, according to the Nigeria Centre for Disease Control and Prevention (NCDC).

This was mentioned in the NCDC’s week 36 cholera epidemiological report, which was given to the media on Wednesday in Abuja.

“With a case fatality rate of 0.7 percent, there were 141 suspected cases, one death, and one week 36. These were recorded in 19 LGAs in the states of Katsina, Lagos, Kano, Jigawa, and Adamawa.

According to the report, “216 deaths with a case fatality rate (CFR) of 2.8 percent from 7,663 suspected cases have been reported cumulatively from week one to week 36, 2024.” Eyes Of Lagos reports,

It revealed that 280 LGAs in 35 States and the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) had at least one suspected case reported, and that 10 states accounted for 89% of all suspected cases. Lagos made up fifty-eight percent; Bayelsa seven percent; Katsina six percent; Jigawa five percent; Zamfara three percent; Ebonyi three percent; Rivers two percent; Abia two percent; Ogun two percent; and Imo one percent.

The study also showed that 15 LGAs account for 57% of all instances, with Lagos Island LGA in Lagos State making up the largest percentage at 8%.

Sometimes ignorance is the killer and not disease itself. I witnessed a young mother ignorantly let her baby die. The baby had diarrhea for some days and she was ignorant to take him to the nearest clinic. Even ignorant to give ORT (Oral Rehydration Therapy).

Na so the baby die.

I also saw another careless mum at Harvey Road, Yaba back then. Baby was convulsing yet she left for work. She brought her in dead!

Cholera is an acute diarrheal disease caused by the Vibrio cholerae bacterium, often linked to contaminated water and food. In Sub-Saharan Africa, outbreaks are frequent due to inadequate sanitation, poor water infrastructure, and limited healthcare access. Vulnerable populations, including children and those in conflict zones, are at heightened risk. Preventive measures include improving water supply, sanitation, and hygiene (WASH) practices, alongside vaccination campaigns during outbreaks. Swift treatment with rehydration and antibiotics is crucial for survival.
