NNPCL-Dangote Fuel Price Outrageous, Exploitative – Reps Minority Caucus by ogododo(op): 10:18pm On Sep 17, 2024
As reactions continue to trail the Dangote Refinery and the Nigerian National Petroleum Company Limited’s fuel price deal, the House of Representatives Minority Caucus has described the N980 per litre of pump price as outrageous and exploitative.

Chairman of the caucus, Kingsley Chinda, said the development was a burden added to the already struggling Nigerians.

In a statement that he signed and obtained by DAILY POST on Tuesday in Abuja, the lawmaker expressed his outrage over the pump price that varies from N950 to N980 and above N1000 per litre depending on the parts of the country.

The statement said: “We find this pricing regime to be not only burdensome but utterly unacceptable, particularly in light of the fact that this fuel is refined locally.”

The lawmaker emphasised that locally refined fuel should be priced significantly lower than imported fuel, as it avoids costs such as landing charges and import duties, insisting that the pricing model was wrong for all intents and purposes.

“It appears Nigerians are unfairly exploited, especially at a time when many are facing severe economic challenges,” he said, urging NNPCL and Dangote Refinery to reconsider their stand in the interest of the poor masses.

The statement warned that allowing the current pricing arrangement to continue would only deepen the economic hardships of millions and erode trust in local refineries’ ability to deliver affordable fuel. The caucus called on regulatory bodies and the government to urgently review the pricing framework to ensure Nigerians are not subjected to unsustainable fuel prices.

The caucus affirmed its commitment to protecting the welfare of the Nigerian people and pledged to engage relevant stakeholders to ensure fair and just fuel pricing.

They should have engaged the lawmakers first before making this statement. The lawmakers are acting in the interest of the public and deserve our support.

They were all busy feasting from our grounded refinery and want to castigate a man that has survived every arrow to keep his company afloat.
It won't work

Minority doesnt mean you must sound like a pained loser. How much are other refineries around the world selling on the average?
hisgrace090:
You are comparing your Nigeria paying less than 40 dollar as minimum wage with countries paying 700 dollar and above.
You're evil and anti human.
Nigeria is not a refinery. Dangote is not a country or govt of a country.

Dangote Refinery: Why Cheap Petrol is a Mirage

Nigerians are eager for Dangote’s refinery to reduce fuel prices, but let’s pause and ask: how realistic is that? Aliko Dangote didn’t produce cheap cement, despite getting limestone for free, along with tax concessions, import waivers, and free land to build his cement factories. Now, we expect him to magically produce cheap petrol after spending $100 million on land and $20 billion to build the refinery. That’s a fantasy.

The only way Dangote can produce petrol at a lower price is if he gets crude oil at subsidized rates. But even then, what stops him from selling that fuel abroad, where the profit margins are better, or smuggling it out through illicit channels? Without government oversight, subsidized crude will likely benefit his business more than the average Nigerian consumer.

In reality, we might find Dangote’s petrol more expensive than the imported fuel we currently rely on. Why? The cost of building such a massive refinery, the debt to finance it, and the global oil market all play a role. Oil refining is a capital-intensive business. Dangote will need to recoup his $20 billion investment, and that burden will fall on consumers.

Rather than expecting Dangote to rescue us with cheap petrol, we need policies that address the inefficiencies in Nigeria’s energy sector. Until we deal with smuggling, subsidies, and the real costs of production, hoping for affordable fuel from Dangote is just wishful thinking.

Hypocrisy please.

The entire National Assembly right under their watch, saw petrol price rise from 180 to the present prices. Why the complain now when the ship long set sail?

since you want to compare, ask yourself, those refineries you're talking about, I'm sure the country they're located have uninterrupted power supply?

And what is the average minimum wage of these nations?? When u compare spending cost, u must also compare the earnings & wages of those nations if u don't want chaos & anarchy. You don't expect people to be earning like ants but spending like elephants, learn to be reasonable pls!

The minority leader is just trying to play safe, because his benefactor is in corridor of power, how on earth could a local refinery sells petrol refined internally like what Dangote and NNPCL are doing,an opposition leader came out and be begging the govt if not for compromising stands.

Nothing good can come out of anything NNPC is involved...remember they first attack dangote that his fuel was inferior...all this was a form of bully so that he can come to terms with them ..if not they will make sure he will be frustrated...but now they have made themselves the sole distributor of dangote fuel ...when we say that NNPC is most corrupt entity in Nigeria....

The criminal in control of nnpc won't let go . A country with three non functional refineries is not ashamed that one man was able to build one standard refinery.
All allocations given to maintain these nnpc would have built 7 new refineries but few people shared the money.

Even if Dangote buys in dollar this price is way too much.

Civilian government has happened to vulnerable Nigeria. I was born during minitary era. But this democracy is absolutely something else. I rest my case. Demonstration of crazy. An average Nigeria politician are cruel, heart of stone, no conscience as little as mustard seed, selfish, self centered and self interest in respect of their religions affiliation.
