The Zamfara State Governor, Dauda Lawal, has alleged that his predecessor, Bello Matawalle, was fully involved in some banditry issues bedevelling the state. Speaking on a TVC politics programme on Wednesday night, the governor alleged that with information at his disposal, his predecessor headed a government that was in bed with bandits. Lawal also accused the last administration led by Bello, who is now the Minister of State for Defence, of siphoning the state funds and handling insecurity with kid’s gloves. “Yes, there were a lot of issues in the past, with my predecessor. In fact, let me state this very categorically, if I were him (Matawalle), I would resign and face all the allegations against me and that would have been more honourable. Because from all the information we are getting, my predecessor (Matawalle) was fully involved in some of these banditry issues,” Lawal said. Justifying his claim that his predecessor was involved in the banditry issues, he recounted how a permanent secretary during Matawalle’s administration paid ransom through the government house to free his children abducted by bandits. The governor said, “Typical is the fact that there was a permanent secretary whose children were abducted and it was unfortunate he had to pay ransom through the Government House. It was also very clear based on all the allegations that bandits were being kept at the Government House. And there were so many other issues.” He added that he was Matawalle, he would have resigned to clear his name from all allegations against him,so, for me honestly, if I were him, I would step aside and face these allegations until I clear my name before I come back to continue my job. How can you imagine these allegations against him and he’s still the minister of defence? I mean, that is unfair. This man could have been honourable, stepped aside and faced these allegations, cleared his name, and come back to continue his job,” Lawal said. He added that his predecessor’s file was before the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission and that it was surprising that the same person was cleared by lawmakers and security outfits for the post of minister. “In May 2023, there was this allegation of misappropriating over N70 billion and when we took over, we realised that N70 billion was child’s play compared to the rot on the ground and all this information was before the EFCC and I wondered how this guy was cleared by the security operatives before he’s confirmed as a minister. If I were him, I would still face the EFCC and say look, let me clear my name. “This is a father to 41 children and for goodness sake, what kind of legacy is he going to leave for his children when you are being accused of misappropriating such amount of money? So, he should have come out clean, faced EFCC, and cleared his name. “But we are still waiting to hear from the EFCC and the case has been going on for over a year now. Meanwhile, this is people’s money that we are talking about. We need this money in Zamfara with all the challenges we are facing, including financial constraints. At least, let’s have some of this money back to Zamfara so that we can work for the people of the state,” Lawal said. When contacted for a reaction, Mattawalle’s Personal Assistant (Media), Ahmad Dan Wudil, said the minister would soon respond to the allegations by the governor. “I will forward you our response today regarding that allegation. I will get back to you,” Wudil told our correspondent during a telephone conversation on Thursday.

dododawa1:Bello Turji has more than confirmed many of what this Governor claims at this point. The problem is what are the people of Zamfara doing about these allegations? ![]() Matawalle is just a minister and there is no immunity around his office. So how many suits have been filed against him in the courts abeg? If the Governor has all of this information at his disposal, why has he not called for the immediate arrest, investigation, and possible prosecution of the Matawalle? ![]() |

Kobojunkie:What can they do? Use hands to fight people with AK47, rocket launchers, and aircraft fighting machine guns? Tinubu is the one to hold here because Tinubu still appointed a terrorist leader as minister for defense... |

Brendaniel:So, the governor shouldn't even attempt to file a suit against the man in the Nigerian courts because Tinubu appointed the man as Minister? Are you people for real? Some of you reason things upside down... that is why Nigeria is the way it is really. This upside down reasoning which is clearly of bad citizenry is a terrible problem. ![]() |

Even Bello Turji boldly made the same grievous allegations against Matawalle, but in a country with a corrupt government filled with hardened criminals and terrorists, the relevant government agencies responsible for homeland security proactiveness & surveillance will behave like nothing happened. |

Kobojunkie:No, we are not reasoning things upside down, it is just that fighting a case in court against Tinubu and his cronies in present day Nigeria is dead on arrival except you have divine backing or a more superior support to what he has.... And I don't think the governor has that now... I think you really need to know the system before you make comments or attacks... |

Brendaniel:Come on naw! So because we perceive it may be a difficult fight, we should simply throw our hands up and not attempt to even file a suit in court to at least start the process as is required by the Constitution? 🤔 Contrary to your conclusion above, most cases aren't actually dead on arrival but kicked along for years instead. And in a case where a corrupt judge is in place, should that judge be proven corrupt at a later date, the cases he/she presided over can be revisited so let's stop creating these disgusting reasons for why Nigerians should continue to fold their hands and do absolutely nothing while their inheritance is plundered and their futures rendered of no real value. 🙄 |

Kobojunkie:You don't know Tinubu, he is a man you either don't fight but if you decide to fight him, make sure you take him out, because if you don't.... That is usually the problem with people who start a fight with him, they usually underestimate how far he can go just to win... You don't know Tinubu.... |

| Re: My Predecessor Involved In Banditry Crisis, Zamfara Gov Alleges by Brendaniel: 5:38pm On Sep 19, 2024 |
Kobojunkie:Nothing like typical Nigerian here, for someone like Tinubu, don't start a fight you can't finish, he doesn't have limits to how far he can go just to win especially if the battle is about his ambition or obsession and this one right here is connected with his ambition/obsession |
| Re: My Predecessor Involved In Banditry Crisis, Zamfara Gov Alleges by Kobojunkie: 5:41pm On Sep 19, 2024 |
Brendaniel:You are nothin' but the typical Nigerian. You will do and say everything you can cook up as a means to avoid doing that which is required of good citizens... yes, you are the typical example of a bad citizen, and Nigeria is filled with people like you. ![]() |
| Re: My Predecessor Involved In Banditry Crisis, Zamfara Gov Alleges by Brendaniel: 5:46pm On Sep 19, 2024 |
Kobojunkie:not at all, I don't support Tinubu, you can check all my posts, but he is not someone you just take on a fight anyhow, that's why a lot of people have failed fighting him and even failed from stopping him from becoming president. |

Kobojunkie:His file is with EFCC for one year now. It's in the post. |
| Re: My Predecessor Involved In Banditry Crisis, Zamfara Gov Alleges by Kobojunkie: 6:15pm On Sep 19, 2024 |
Gandollar:Does EFCC somehow replace the Nigerian Judicial system which instead handles all criminal(and civil) cases? What you just said is like suggesting his case is with the ICPC. 😏 |
| Re: My Predecessor Involved In Banditry Crisis, Zamfara Gov Alleges by Gandollar(f): 6:18pm On Sep 19, 2024 |
Kobojunkie:EFCC is the appropriate authority to go to when money of that nature is missing. They would investigate and prosecute. |
| Re: My Predecessor Involved In Banditry Crisis, Zamfara Gov Alleges by Kobojunkie: 6:20pm On Sep 19, 2024 |
Gandollar:Wrong! EFCC IS NOT the appropriate anything in this case or any other as there should never be a substitute or go-between as far as the courts in Nigeria. That is according to the Nigerian Constitution. ![]() |
