and so?! i dont get where the problem is.
if someone offers you a job, if you dont want it, you say no and jejely walk the fukc out... but dont pretend that because children pay 200k for school fees, you can dictate how much you deserve as a teacher in that school. thats what the school is offering, take it or leave it! so you mean that if they were schooling for free, then you would also work for free?!

stop looking at other people's finances... in order to try to lift yourself up, as you dont know what they spend that money on:
- are you paying the rent for the building?
- are you paying the electricity/equipment used in that school?
- are you paying for the free food that these kids possibly get?
- are you paying for all the extracurricular outings and activities that these children learn?
- are you paying the salary of all the other staff and owners of that school?
calm down with your analysis. Do you consider teacher transportation, feeding and saving too . From that 55k? If they are schooling for free, she might accept 20k as salary if she feels like.

Exploitation of the highest order, no wonder banker resign in Nigeria and go abroad to be a cleaners because the system work properly there

Go and start your own school/business and employ staff you will pay 200k and above if e easy.
No when you work for someone they owe you good pay . I dont know why you people still have this slave mentality in this part of the world? Say thing goes to how you see goverment official as though they are gods reason you worship them

Great response. Seems you own a business. Most comments are from people who do not understand the risk , challenges and dangers in owing and managing a business. They look at the bulk pack relative to their earning.in addition multiple taxation, higj interest on loans, maintenance cost, security, operstions cost etc..Maybe given the economic crunch perent may not always be early and complete with the fees

And gow about the government that was paying 30k. They ha e not implemented the 70k raise.

While I think employers to make better profit to share a bit more with employees, the issue isn't how much one earns, but how bad the economy is. People who earn $6k in North America live a decent life.

But you didn't answer my question.
I ask whether the 200k per term, is it for a single child or all the children combined?
yesloaded:
Some school charge more than 200k per term

I know of a school here that charges 380k per term for primary school

Well, we can't tell business owners for to run their business but I assumed a school that charges 200k & above per term is a big school and teachers needs to be motivated with reasonable pay so they can teach the students very well thereby parents gets value for their money

Add the following taxes.
Renewal fees
Fumigation and health certificates
Land and property taxes
Signage taxes
Taxes by various examination bodies per year
Water taxes (yes schools pay water tax on each staff either they are supplied with water or not)
Development taxes
Association fees local government, state and federal level
School bus taxes and levies
Proprietors income tax
And a host of many others!

I will reply you because you have exhibited some degree of decorum in your manner of engagement.
Are you an employer of labor? Because on this thread I can see people who understand and those who have no clue as to the odious terrain we are in currently in terms of starting and running a private business. 2 of my friends, one in the printing and design business and the other in plastic manufacturing/processing have had to downsize twice in the course of the last 2 years. When they present the figures before you, will almost weep. The excruciating pain of trying to do things right in this country. In fact while I was at one's office some officials of FIRS came in concerning some crazy bill of 8m which they insisted be cleared. The only businesses that may appear to have things running smoothly are the SPVs/money laundering outlets fronting as businesses.
As bad as the salaries seemed, my friends' staff preferred to receive a salary cut than to have 30% of them laid off. My guys took the harder option because they opted to abide by their earlier financial commitments. They downsized.
The advanced countries you mention have several things going for them too numerous to mention here. Employers are the least of the problem here trust me. You said I see nothing wrong with the arrangement. You think the 55k salary is the arrangement? That's myopic bro. That's addressing the leaves not the root.
Let us begin with what it costs to even start and run the school breaking it down as simply as I possibly can.

Initial start-up costs will include:
-Building renovation
-Furniture, fixtures, and equipment
-Educational resources (textbooks, technology, etc.)
-Staff recruitment
-Marketing and advertising
-Licensing and accreditation fees
-Insurance (liability, property, etc.)
-Utility deposits (electricity, water, internet, etc.)
-Miscellaneous (office supplies, etc.)

Then we go to recurring operational costs:
-Debt servicing with our interest rates o (as financing is required)
-Staff salaries
-Utilities (electricity, water, internet, etc.) Generator running cost alone can cripple you.
-Maintenance and repairs
-Educational resources and materials
-Technology upgrades and maintenance
-Marketing and advertising
-Transportation (buses, fuel, maintenance, etc.)
-Extracurricular activities and programs (excursions etc)
-Security and safety measures
-Administrative expenses (accounting, HR, etc.)

We never finish o, other costs to consider:
-Accreditation and certification fees (crazy in these climes)
- Compliance with local, state, or national regulations, levies and taxes (unending and arbitrary here in Nigeria)
-Support staff (gardeners, cleaners, etc.)
-School premise upgrades
-Contingency funds for unexpected expenses.. the list goes on and on..

Do you know the percentage of the parents/guardians of pupils that even default in payments?
Some that keep begging and opt for staggered payments?
People do not have the foggiest idea of the reality of these things. You just look at the school fees and use it to determine your salary. I laugh in Itsekiri grin

Guy, don't join the people who only naturally adopt a victim/entitlement mentality.
When people start starting and running their businesses and not just running their mouths on social media, they will know wassup.
You still don't get it, do you? There are schools that charge 50k per term, right? Schools that charge 100k per term. Those that charge 150k per term, those that charge 200k per term, the ones that charge 250k per term and this one in particular is charging close to 300k per term aside other smaller charges.
Now, how much do you think those schools that charge 50k to 200k are currently paying their teachers in this economy since you're here justifying a school that charges 300k but paying its teachers 55k per month?
If you are a parent who is paying 300k per term and you discover that your kid's teacher is receiving 55k per month as salary, withdraw your kid from that school ASAP. That's exploitation of the highest order no matter how you justify it and your kid's teacher wouldn't be motivated at all. That's pure slavery, greatest underemployent.
If the school wasn't charging that much, we would have tried to reason along.
Re: Teacher Offered ₦55,000 To Teach Students That Pay N294k School Fees by IbeOkehie:
I don't understand what the problem is here.

If you don't want to work for 55K then go find another job. 🙄

The employer will definitely raise the salary if they're unable to attract workers with that pay

If the teacher thinks there's high profit in private schools, she can go set up her own.

That's how markets work. What exactly is the problem here? Over and above this, all laws regulating wages need to be abolished.

Good Luck to Nigeria.

Fortunately for me I can't get it because we think so differently.
While you are seeing and thus thinking based on how much they charge (the end result; just like our disgruntled video-making teacher), I see and think all it takes and what it costs to establish the school and set things up to the point of even getting to employ and retain staff not to mention the myriads of other costs and bottlenecks entrepreneurs experience that I outlined earlier.
See? We really see things differently.
And the way we see things certainly dictates how we approach them and eventual outcomes.
Do have a great weekend bro.

Most unemployed people stay the same in many cases because of greed, being poorly informed and unrealistic expectations. If you are really in need of a job and you were offered a teaching job with such a salary and your main reason for rejecting the offer is because the pupils In that school pay a certain amount as school fees, that means you have other sources of income. Do those pupils pay that amount monthly? Do you know the overhead costs to run the school? Do you know the amount of taxes and other expenses borne by the school? We may not know the amount you get from parents as thank you gifts. It's very certain you don't need a job.

Neduzoma123456:
Below is an example of a school worth fees of 30k

100 students pay 30k = 3,000,000
10 teachers gets 70k = 700,000

10 students per Teacher (very realistic, don't argue)

A term is usually 3 months...School fees is paid once...Total monthly salary of teachers would be 700,000 x 3 months..that gives us = 2,100,000

What stops schools from applying this.

Then imagine a school of 290k as fees paying cheap 55k for labour ...like seriously...THIS IS WRONG!

it just pure wickedness...most School owners and Business owners in Nigeria are cruel...SIMPLE... They only want to use you dry.
Are you really serious with this your submission?

So the school will make an average of 900k every 3 mnts.. Meaning the owner of the school will go home with 300k monthly? Is this even feasible?

Let me put forward some questions to you to answer...

1. Have you considered that apart from teachers salary, there are other expenses the school incurs monthly, like cost of maintenance of school properties, some levies the school pay to authorities, other staff that are working in the school in non teaching positions (principal, secretaries, school nurse, cleaners, printing of exam papers, documents, adverts, telephone cost and other office expenses or running cost etc). How much do you think these persons will be paid monthly from the 300k that will remain after the school pays the teachers. Note that this is not even an exhaustive lost of their monthly expenditures and I didn't add miscellaneous activities like school bus (if they have one) etc to it

2. Say the owner of the school even gets 300k monthly... Be sincere with yourself, how much is 300k

If you were the owner of the school, will you really take 300k monthly as your take home salary, after using your strength, ability and brain to run your school business for 30 days? Even those who work for others in the corporate world earn better than 300k, yet you expect an entrepreneur with a capital intensive business like running a school to take 300k home... X'mon.

3. Do you know how much it cost to build or set up a school... At least a school that's standard enough for parents to be willing to pay 200k+ termly? Do you?

So after investing several millions to set up the school, you really expect the ROI to be 300k monthly? Do you even know the managerial skills that needs to be employed in running a school to make the school profitable especially in this present economy? Yet 300k is good enough for the owner to take home?

4. Have you considered that the millions of naira used to build or set up the school might be a loan that needs to be repaid? And u think 300k monthly that's not enough for the school owner to even enjoy (based on his status and ability) will be enough to service loans and all?

Do you want a school owner to be trekking to school because he or she can't afford basic luxury or some benefits that's supposed to be enjoyed?

5. Do you know at the rate above, it will take probably 10yrs+ to break even? I'm not even talking about making profit o, just breaking even.

In as much as most employers UNDERPAY their employees in Nigeria... Also consider the fact that business owners are in the business to make and maximise profit. So no one will pay you salaries that'll be detrimental to their own welfare or that of the business.

EVEN 500k salary is not feasible for a school owner that invested millions of naira.

Should the school do better in terms of payment ... YES OF COURSE

Should the school owner take 300k or less home monthly... NOT AT ALL.

Irrespective of all these facilities, you will find out that it's still all useless without an efficient Teacher. Workers should be paid reasonable wages. A class of may be 20 Students paying N297,000/term is N5,940,000/term and their teacher is paid just 165,000 for the term, if it's 3months is just too paltry about 2.7%.
1x2x3:
Someone pays you about 300K for their child and you hired 50K labour to get the job done. The students will get 50K education. You don't see the problem here?
Quality teachers won't accept 50K so the school settles for lesser quality sad
the quality of a teacher has ABSOLUTELY NOTHING to do with how much you pay a teacher. what makes you believe that all teachers in Nigeria are good teachers and therefore they deserve a "top teacher" salary?!? some of these teachers earn 35k because the school is a shack in some village where children are paying peanuts as school fees.... and no matter how great that teachers is, he wont get more.

in a proper setting, then when that teachers shows the school that he/she is a top teacher (because not all teachers are good), then when that teachers suddenly gets a better offer from another school and decides to leave (or ask for a raise), you will try to entice him to stay with a better salary/perks... but if that teacher is happy receiving 55k, why should owner give more? you could invest the extra money to better the school/classes etc in order to attract more students?!

Azzik:
Na then br this, monkey dey work babbon dey chop system for Nigeria...if this is how the system is abroad our people for no dey troop in drove there...we have a very weak labour and employment system in Africa
sadly, let me be the bearer of bad news... the majority who japa and land Abroad with no valid visa will do yeye job that are worse than slavery (earning pennies to the dollar) and there will be 1000s illegal immigrants desperate to do these yeye jobs. do you think its a coincidence that as soon as Poland and Czech republic joined the EU, then suddenly all the plumbers and bricklayers in France are from East Europe and earning 30% less than the normal national rate for these same jobs? the above happens all over the world.

the fact that you believe that, if a school owner gets two CVs on his desk and both teachers have the same qualifications (but one accepts to work for 55k), the school owner should pay double because thats whats "fair", then you sir are living in la la land and dont understand what it means to run a business.

NOT AT ALL.
Mumu...wrote this long episode without even thinking.

I used 30k as fees and 100 students as example.

You know very well , almost all private schools pay way above 30k as school fees.

And you also know very well most secondary schools have more than 100 students in it.

Mumu.

the quality of a teacher has ABSOLUTELY NOTHING to do with how much you pay a teacher. what makes you believe that all teachers in Nigeria are good teachers and therefore they deserve a "top teacher" salary?!? some of these teachers earn 35k because the school is a shack in some village where children are paying peanuts as school fees.... and no matter how great that teachers is, he wont get more.

in a proper setting, then when that teachers shows the school that he/she is a top teacher (because not all teachers are good), then when that teachers suddenly gets a better offer from another school and decides to leave (or ask for a raise), you will try to entice him to stay with a better salary/perks... but if that teacher is happy receiving 55k, why should owner give more? you could invest the extra money to better the school/classes etc in order to attract more students?!

sadly, let me be the bearer of bad news... the majority who japa and land Abroad with no valid visa will do yeye job that are worse than slavery (earning pennies to the dollar) and there will be 1000s illegal immigrants desperate to do these yeye jobs. do you think its a coincidence that as soon as Poland and Czech republic joined the EU, then suddenly all the plumbers and bricklayers in France are from East Europe and earning 30% less than the normal national rate for these same jobs? the above happens all over the world.

the fact that you believe that, if a school owner gets two CVs on his desk and both teachers have the same qualifications (but one accepts to work for 55k), the school owner should pay double because thats whats "fair", then you sir are living in la la land and dont understand what it means to run a business.
In the role of a parent, you have the option to invest in your child's education by enrolling them in a good sch and paying a hefty sch fees. In return, the school provides education worth 50K.

A teacher who receives a salary of 50K may struggle to save money for professional development opportunities. A well-compensated teacher, however, can invest in courses, improve their quality of life, and ultimately provide better education to their students.

i do not believe that the salary of a teacher determines whether your children get a sound education or not... the school facilites/curriculum etc will determine that, whether teachers are paid 55k or 1m monthly.
what happens in a teacher's private life is irrelevant to the above.

If you advertise a teaching position with a salary of 50K, the first thing you should understand is that well-trained, high-quality teachers won't even consider applying. This means you’ll likely receive applications mostly from underqualified or less experienced candidates, leaving you with a pool of subpar options to choose from.

Think about it: no teacher who has invested years of effort and training to hone their skills would settle for such a low salary. It's important to recognize that offering inadequate pay limits your access to skilled professionals, which directly affects the quality of education your students will receive.

Curriculum and environment don't teach kids what they need to know, the teachers do.
