Nobody cares anymore. Children born when he died are twenty-six years old today. I doubt you are up to the age.

Abacha was one of the best leaders Nigeria and even Africa ever had.
That is why enemies of Africa sponsored his assassination by poisoning.

Very likely he died from illness.

Already several months earlier there had been rumors that he had been ill. In October of the precceding year, the then leader of Mali made a comment where he essentially stated that 'as a friend, I think you should take a rest'. Throw in the fact that the man went MIA for some time before then, before he made a reappearance , and the continous rumors, and yeah, no smoke without fire....and the evidence points to the fact that he died from a severe illness of some sort.

He was not a good leader, especially as he

1. Kept Nigeria reliant on oil...or resource dependent (in fairness all Nigerian leaders before and after him are guilty of this one. That is why Ghaddafi was always vulnerable regardless of how much he did. At the end of the day, he who makes the gunpowder wins the war...not about how much gunpowder you got in stock)

2. Was very oppressive....even makes this APC government look like nice people. APC will jail you and your lawyer knows where you are. Abacha would jail you and no one would know where you are. If Abacha jailed someone like MNK for example, he won't even be allowed out of prision at all. He might even be killed on returning to Nigeria...same as Saro-Wiwa and the others were.

3. Had two exchange rates...offical and parallel...which encoruaged round tripping and corruption.

4. Corruption was really bad

5. Started building a personality cult....to the point that by 1997 , one could improve one's chances of getting a job if you wore an abacha badge. (I wish I was joking).

Independence day celebrations became mass events praising the Leader and his wife...., especially from 1996. KInd of makes our civillan leaders look tame.

And you dare not criticse or attack the leader. Jail was yer next stop if you did.

6. At the end, Nigeria was still in a bad state when he died.

He was poisoned...

He was too powerful, coups could not work for him, poison was the best bet, it also helped that he was a muslim.

The rumor at the time was that he died atop of one of his concubines...he wasn't murdered. 😂😂😂😂😂😂 And all of Nigeria, from North to South, rejoiced on that day. 🥳🥳🥳🥳

This is the true story.
Man was sick for months before he eventually died. Though some people attribute the sickness to earlier poisoning

He made too many enemies for himself

Abacha was one million times better than all our civilian president put today because his government stabilize the economy of Nigeria and people were living in peace.

Abacha was giving a bad names by politicians especially many from south west because they wanted to replace him and deal with the country like they are doing now.

I don't think there is any thing that Abacha did now that our politicians are not doing.

Tinubu's children are wasting government money and getting contracts like Abacha's children.

People are killed by government officials every day just like it was during Abacha's times. People are oppressed by the government and locked up in prison for months and courts are not obeyed like Abacha's times.

So kindly tell me what is happening now that was never happening before democracy came.

But he was by far a better leader when you compare him with the current notorious narcotics drug trafficker, certificate forger, buccaneering power grabber engaging in criminal state capture who has only succeeded in inflicting premium pains, hunger, and starvation on the citizens.

Why would it make sense to compare him to any of the current crop of criminals for Pete's sake? undecided
