What are the uses of masquerades?

In the past they represented the spirit of the dead ancestors but things have fallen apart, masquerades have stayed but the beliefs that surrounded the masquerades has died, no one truly believes in reincarnated ancestors anymore.

The people in the masquerades attire themselves might even go to church on Sunday to do Thanksgiving to Jesus, on Monday faithfully abide by the orders of a Finnish national and on Tuesday write to the Canadian Embassy to process their visa.
