Nothing wrong riding a bike while you keep your head out for other opportunities. You might be lucky to land a good job with your first degree. Don't limit yourself to that village riding bike alone. It's good you're moving to PH. Try as many other things you can.

Good luck!

It's not any parents' joy seeing their kid coming back from school as a graduate to ride a 'bike'.

unfortunately, the money and profit he's gaining from the okada business is much more than whatever amount your organization pays him. Daily business is the key and he's financially free and you wouldn't expect him to leave his freedom to go become a slave of 9-5.
Corporate work with tie na big scam of the century

There's dignity in labor, however there are some things you must consider when doing things like this. Always isolate your mind from the common mindset of people doing Okada job, keep your brain sharp and always apply the wisdom of a graduate while doing it.
Wishing you all the best.

Bro, you're doing very well . As long as far you're a problem solver you'll continue to earn.

I'll share my own side of the story very soon.

Thank God for everything
Re: Career Journey: How My Motorcycle Business Is Going. by Mathewrichard99: 6:40pm On Sep 28, 2024
I like your mentality. The facts that you know and agreed that it's not befitting of a graduate that spent a whole 4 to 6 yrs at the university with strike etc ..to graduate and be an okada man.

Your parents and family wouldn't be all that happy ofcourse even though they might just try and encourage you.

I also like your Dad, he didn't bother so much about what you are doing but went ahead to be encouraging you and even got a Masters admission form for you. That man is a great man.

You are hardworking, you are doggedly focus to survive at all cost doing legitimate job. You are very strong and unashamed of doing a legitimate job even though it's belittling your personality.

My advise, keep on doing this. You have acquired 2 bikes now, soon you will acquire 3, 4, 5 and 6 etc.....

Please, think about adding value to the job by raising the standard a little. You can do this by doing something like Gokada kind of system.

Discuss with IT experts, programmers on how you can make an App for okada riders. This would be well discussed while you are doing your studies at Uniport.

This would enable other Okada drivers to download your app as drivers while your potential passengers too download the riders app just like it's done in Uber and Bolts and also Gokada.

After this is done, you might not even have the interest of buying more Okada again cos those other drivers will be the one using their own Okada to be doing the job while yours is just to be maintaining your App and also be making money on each ride......don't charge too much o....let your percentage be fair enough so that many okada drivers will key into it.

Don't be discouraged, it's doable and not difficult. Talking from experienced.

Lastly, I wish you success in this your business exploit.

I was like you some years ago. I was discouraged, mocked and even belittled when I threaded this path though not as motorcyclist but shuttle driver. The job, though not for the faint hearted, has been so good until Tinubu disastrous economic policies through the removal of fuel sunsidy and naira floating crashed the returns, gradually collapsing what used to be a lucrative business.

What is it about being a graduate?
Don't mind some Nigerians like say if you're a University graduates you don become a millionaire be dat. Things and situation have really changed a lot now. This is not in the 70s and 60s anymore. Hunger and frustration will kill graduate who can't put down his or her ego to find any legal alternative to sort himself or herself in this harsh economy especially if you're from a poor struggle home. Make dem play dey go.

Previous thread
https://www.nairaland.com/8074347/finally-bought-motorcycle-nysc-savings/4#132200405

This thread is created to just encourage youths, if you are going through a lot, u are not a lot, we plenty for the country.
Earlier this year I created a topic on the motorcycle I bought with my NYSC savings, so I won't be stranded after NYSC. The journey has not been easy, showing up everyday consistently with the urge to give up yet too determined to succeed.
Unpleasant words from friends and family that are too embarrassed with me driving motorcycle, constant bully and extortion from tax force and agbero has been my major problem.
Nigeria is not for the weak.

I learned how to drive the motorcycle, at first it wasn't easy at all, but man no get option, if I had super powers, I would just learn it in a day.
Anyways I still entered road after learning the basics and balancing the bike, this was the beginning of reality, some days I won't make much money and the bike will have issues due to bad roads in Abia state(the state I served), it was so bad that sometimes heavy vehicles will fall and cover the road, I will end up fixing my bike from the little I saved. I wasn't saving much, I had to travel back to my village and decide to drive there since we have better roads... Typing
God bless your hustle man.

..But he agreed to assist me in the schooling, so I went to uniport and picked a form in accounting, cos I needed the analytical and management knowledge, even though I have ruled out the possibilities of getting a job, the accounting skill will help me manage my own business and companies in the future, so I had to pick the form, since I didn't study accounting in my first degree, I had to pick PGD form and will continue my business while still acquiring knowledge, I might not create another thread for now until I finish my schooling and probably have a solid business that thrives on a system.
I know it won't be easy but it's not impossible
How much is the PGD there and how long is it??

It is only in Nigeria that too much importance is attached to academic qualifications. In the UK, someone with A LEVEL CERTIFICATE earn more than a graduate by having experience on the job. Also people who leaned one form of trade or another could earn a decent salary. What really matters is how much experience you have in a particular job or profession. Getting a master's degree in the UK does not give you any edge against a person with a first degree. I have seen lecturers in the university who had only a first degree with reasonable length of experience on the field. Such a thing does not happen in Nigeria. To be a lecturer these items, one has to get a PhD (Poor, hungry and determined).

My dear, i was in a similar situation. But today, the story has changed. I dnt even think that i can work for someone again. All the money i saved from bike business was invested into farming and i am super great ful to God and those who discouraged me then, have testified . My dear, be courageous in everything you do and dont let people discouraged you bcs its ur life, ur future and ur destiny.

Our education in Nigeria is a waste I swear. There is nothing wrong with riding a bike in as much as you are meeting needs of people and making money. I know someone who built a storey building with bike riding alone while our graduates are earning 80k while spending 40k on transportation per month.

OP kudos to you and I will be following you from today to watch your progress.

I love this kind of story and the sole purpose of education is to acquire problem solving skills to succeed in the real society. Most graduates of today have zero problems solving skills and it is very sad.

Always bear that in mind.
Okada riding first, you save money and buy more okadas, then you give out on hire purchase and become a business man, next you can incorporate a business involving deliveries with okadas to restaurants and next, you can partner with an IT programmer for an Okada IT start-up that involves deliveries.

When I walk through the the streets of Lagos, I see oppoturnities for millions of Naira everywhere, myriads of problems to solve and make money.
Please can you explain the "bolded" more. Thank you!

Fast forward to 2 weeks ago, I was able to save some money and decided to get a another second hand motorcycle which I'll give out for hire purchase while still driving my first bike.
But my Dad suggested I should pick up a masters programme form, at first going back to school was not part of my plans, at least not now. But he agreed to assist me in the schooling, so I went to uniport and picked a form in accounting, cos I needed the analytical and management knowledge, even though I have ruled out the possibilities of getting a job, the accounting skill will help me manage my own business and companies in the future, so I had to pick the form, since I didn't study accounting in my first degree, I had to pick PGD form and will continue my business while still acquiring knowledge, I might not create another thread for now until I finish my schooling and probably have a solid business that thrives on a system.

My brother no tire.
After my first degree and awaiting service I spent 1 year in my salon barbing people. Many person were like "this is the brightest guy in our place and after a very good result from the university na salon him come d operate"
I left for service the following year and before I completed service I was already deep in my masters program which I complete within 18 months, that's 2017. 2018 I started my PhD which I could not complete because I lost my backbone (father) a day after completing my course work. I stated teaching in a private school and doing some side hustle.
After 6 years, God smiled at me. I saw an advert on Whatsapp and I applied, after CBT exams, I did the written and interview, without knowing anybody, I got the job (in this our Nigeria ohhh). Minus allowances, my pay is over 800k, a good 3br apartment, and many other things.

My brother, God is good and school no be scam. My papers gave me a good ground plus my wild experience counted too
