Electricity: Lagos Community Rejects Planned Migration To Band A by adenigga(op): 3:39am On Oct 03, 2024
The residents of Ilasamaja community in Mushin Local Government Area of Lagos State have petitioned the Managing Director/Chief Executive Officer of Eko Electricity Distribution Company (EKDC), rejecting the planned migration from Band B to Band A. The community has vowed to resist the alleged clandestine move with every legal means at their disposal.

In a petition copied to the National Electricity Regulatory Commission (NERC), the Lagos State House of Assembly, and the state Commissioner of Police, among others, the community leaders stated: “We are leaders of all Community Development Associations (CDAs) representing the residents of Ilasamaja, Mushin Local Government Area of Lagos State. We have it on good authority that there are sinister plans to forcefully migrate us from Band B to Band A. We reject this plan and will resist it with everything at our disposal. We have already informed our lawyers to be on red alert for any eventuality.

“We are a peace-loving community, but we will not take our peaceful disposition as cowardice. We will bite without hesitation if you put your hands into our mouth. This evil and unwarranted plan to move us from one band to another forcefully must be jettisoned if you do not want to see the other side of us. We don’t want any movement to any Band A. It was bad enough that you put us on Band ‘B’ without consultation, but forcing us to Band A will definitely be a joke taken too far.

“Ever since you forcefully and wickedly put us on Band B, many of the residents of the community have since discovered that you have surreptitiously been billing them through Band A system. Despite complaints and protests, you have greedily refused to rectify or address their complaints and the problem. You cannot force us to swallow the evil and wicked pills of the World Bank and the International Monetary Fund (IMF) that have not only inflicted unbearable suffering and poverty on the citizens but continue to kill our small and medium enterprises among others.

“You are aware that the residents of Ilasamaja community are mostly peasants, petty traders, lowly paid workers, retirees, and others struggling to earn a living who barely manage to take care of themselves and their responsibilities. The last thing they need is an exploitative electricity tariff that would worsen their living conditions.”

Lol… Naija my country…

give us 24/7 electricity, we want 24 hours light, why can’t government provide stable and steady power supply, yen yen yen… now see the result… when people finally found out the cost of 24/7 stable power supply, they are now rejecting it… it’s not even 24 hours supply yet ooo, they are petitioning to reject it…

See people rejecting Band A like Ebola… Is band A not supposed to be 20 hours minimum?… so why are people refusing to migrate? Cost?

Everything comes with a price…. Ask people abroad how much they pay for that 24/7 stable power supply, you’ll be shocked.

Now, this is not an excuse for the government’s failure. Successive governments have failed Nigerians.

I still have hope for the country sha. Naija shall be great.

I don't like responding to people but.......

Is it the same ,$40 that is the minimum wage per month for formal labor over therehuh

Is it the same way they arbitrarily move people to band A without informing themhuh

Is it the same way their government keep hiding how much it costs to produce electricity nor can it justify the increase in feeshuh

Has the Fed govt paid off it's debt on all its parastatals, ministries and institutionshuh?

Which is one of the main issues for discos not been able to meet financial obligations.

Should Nigerians pay for all the mismanaged US ddenominated loans that have been taken and which have become costlier due to the devaluation of the currency?

This should be my first time responding to a post… and that is because your raised valid points.

Now, let me enlighten you a bit.

The US minimum wage is $15/hr. It used to be $7.25/hr before 2022… Note, when I say minimum wage, I mean federal and not states.

Now, a standard full time is 40 hours weekly. If you do your calculations, you should be earning $600 weekly. Some months are 4 weeks while some are 5. So let’s use 5 weeks for this example. That means in a month, you’ll earn $3000.

Expenses:

Rent/mortgage, electricity, water, sewage, trash, phone bill, gas, food, auto insurance, groceries, health insurance, internet, rental/home owner insurance.

Do you really think the $3000 a minimum wage earner earns monthly would cover these?

Note, those are just basic bills… most Americans have student loans, credit card loans, pet, cable, car maintenance expenses, childcare, life insurance, 401k etc…

The above calculations is for a single person, not family. A standard daycare is nothing less than $150 weekly.

Note, I purposely didn’t add taxes as part of the expenses. If you’re single, you pay 25% as tax on your earnings. Also, you pay taxes on all those bills payment up there… so what do you think will be left after all these?

Have you ever asked yourself why people work more than one job abroad? You think it’s for fun?

I believe you know more people are homeless in the US compared to Nigeria. Do you think all or some of them really wish to sleep on the streets?

Some cities in California hits over 100 degree f during the summer, and yet you see people sleeping on the streets under these conditions. You think they all like it that way?

Now let’s talk about another point you raised - electricity.

In the west, government has no business with electricity. Energy is managed by private companies, not the government. You don’t want to be in some states during summer, while some are during winters. A single family home pays over $200 for electricity bills during summer. Note, I’m only using minimums here.

Nigeria is not the only country that took USD denominated loans. Are you saying our lenders should have given us loans in Naira?

Let’s be constructive in our criticisms.

Note, I used minimum wage cos your response was based on same (minimum wage).

Like I said earlier, I don’t respond to mentions.

Don't be stupid. How much do people abroad earn as minimum wage, compared to the people here? I hate it when you smart alecs senselessly and insensitively compare apples and oranges.
