The Lagos State government has announced the indefinite suspension of its 'Ounje Eko' Food Discount Markets initiative.

Adekunle Adedeji, the Director-General of Eko-Bulletin, made the announcement in a statement addressed to campus directors and representatives dated 17/09/2024.

Titled: "Temporary Closure Of Ounje Eko Initiative," the statement noted that the closure would be temporary.

The statement, which SaharaReporters obtained, reads: "Dear lagosians, it's with deep regret that we announce the temporary closure of the OUNJE EKO initiative across all tertiary institutions in Lagos State. EkoBulletin

"This decision was made after a brief meeting between the HONOURABLE COMMISSIONER, MINISTRY OF FOOD AND AGRICULTURE and all center coordinators and assistant coordinators in relation with improving sales of food items to student.

"Kindly understand that this closure is temporary and will continue as soon as possible

"ITESIWAJU IPINLE EKO LO JE WA LOGUN!!!!".

It should be recalled that Lagos State government had in August announced that the Phase II of the Food Discount Markets 'Ounje Eko' programme would commence on Sunday, September 1, 2024.

The State Commissioner for Agriculture and Food Systems, Ms. Abisola Olusanya, who addressed journalists then had stated that the programme aligns with Governor Babajide Sanwo- Olu's commitment to supporting Lagosians through innovative and impactful initiatives.

Olusanya had stated, "The second phase of Ounje Eko' will run for eight weeks across 64 locations, including the 57 LGAS/LCDAS, Alausa Secretariat, Lekki Phase 1, University of Lagos (UNILAG), Lagos State University (LASU), Lagos Phase 1, University of Lagos (UNILAG), Lagos State University (LASU), Lagos State University of Science and Technology (LASUSTECH), Lagos State University of Education (LASUED), and Lagos State University Teaching Hospital (LASUTH)".

"The markets will operate from 10am to 5pm. Markets at the Alausa Secretariat and the institutions, such as UNILAG, LASU, LASUSTECH, LASUED, and LASUTH, will take place on Fridays, while the market for Mushin LGA to be held at the Fresh Food Hub in Idi-Oro, will operate on Wednesdays and Saturdays. The food items available at the markets will include a maximum cap purchasable of 5kg each for Rice, Beans, and Garri, two loaves of Bread, one crate of Eggs, 2kg of Tomatoes, and 1kg each for Pepper, Tatashe, and Onion per individual.

"Beyond providing food items at discounted prices, Mr. Governor is engaging approximately 6,000 personnel and over 3,000 businesses to supply food items, transportation, logistics, and other necessities. This will ensure the smooth operation of the markets and further bolster our local economy" she added.

SE region people overwhelmed the program thereby making it unsustainable. Lagos can't be subsidizing people from different states where they have useless governors that are looting funds.

The program should be made better by allowing only indigenous Omo Ekos to benefit from the program. Letters of Indigenes from Obas should be presented before sale.

The Lagos food market ‘Ounje Eko’, offering discounted prices on essential food items across the state has commenced sales.

This comes after Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu ordered that food products at the “Ounje Eko” food markets be sold at a discount in all five divisions of Lagos starting on Sunday, March 17.

Our correspondent, on Sunday, March 17, observed that staple food items including rice, beans, garri, bread, eggs, tomatoes, and pepper were made available at 25% discounted prices.

At two locations — Alubarika Primary School, Bariga and Gbagada Junior High School —visited by The Nation, residents trooped in large numbers to purchase different items.

One of the residents, Mrs. Amaka who purchased some items, expressed satisfaction over the food market and the prices of the items stating that they were cheap and affordable.

“I want to encourage other state governors to emulate this; this is a very fantastic and laudable idea.” Mrs. Amaka said.

does it mean your people cannot still afford the already subsidized food? When you make mockery of SE people buying subsidized food in Lagos, you're indirectly insulting your people who couldn't afford it making SE people the most beneficiary.

Does Mrs Amaka sound like an indigenous Lagos name to you. Why do you people hate us and encroaching on our space?

Why can't you tell Mrs Amaka to go to Imo or wherever she is from. In Anambra, we all saw a job vacancy that specified only indigenes can apply. Same should be applied for any program in Lagos to benefit the Indigenes.

You can't be practicing conservatism in your own land while trying to practice liberalism and one Nigeria outside.

I learnt you are from Imo state. Your state people burnt down a university in Imo because of rumours of IDP training institute, while Edo state has had same for many years without issue.

If Nigerians living in any state cannot benefit from the resources of the state government where they live and pay their tax then let the south east and south south keep their gas and oil for only the indigenes of their region and stop sharing it with others, you want to eat your cake and have it abi? No way, since you people insist on 1 Nigeria we will keep flooding every part of the country to enjoy all the benefits of 1 Nigeria,

If you don't like it, simply divide the country or start traveling like the Igbos are doing
Lagos has oil. Ondo has oil. Lagos produces more oil than all SE states. Same as Ondo. Your point is moot.

stagger:
Where have you ever seen an Igbo man begging bread?

Why don't you partner with the government by donating N1m to the project? Then bring 19 of your friends to bring N1m each, making a total of N20m?

That can sort out food for one distribution point.

BUT NO!

It is to come here and be ranting!
Same Igbos that hijacked an onion truck in Imo state, or the same one begging for Okpa and Jollof to sell their votes in my home state of Enugu. Take it easy on your lies nwannem.

Chiwetal Agu below sharing bread.
