Nigerian activist Martins Vincent Otse, known as VeryDarkMan, posted a troubling video on Instagram showing a woman accusing airport staff of extortion.

In the video, the woman claimed she was forced to pay ₦5,000 for each bag, leading to a heated exchange with the staff. She also alleged that she was assaulted by officers at Muritala Mohammed Airport.

The woman threatened to pay ₦1 million to popular bloggers like GistLover and Instablog to spread the word about her experience.

In response, the airport officials insisted they were only carrying out their official duties and denied any wrongdoing.

VeryDarkMan made it clear that he wasn’t paid to share the video and promised to investigate the situation. He also blamed the airport staff’s behavior on low salaries and called on the federal government to raise their wages.

In his post, he tagged the Minister of Aviation, Festus Keyamo, and questioned the legitimacy of the fees. "When did these charges start for passengers' bags? If true, will we soon pay for the air we breathe in Nigeria?" he asked.

The Issue is that are the Charges Official or it's a Bribe ?

if the Charges are Official then they should issue Official Receipts for that .

A typical Nigerian worker especially in the public service doesn't believe they're meant to sustain themselves on their salary. Even if you pay them a million naira monthly, it's for savings... They subsist on bribes and "runs"

he should follow through the right channel to lay complaint or write petition. Social media validation/call out for government response on issues like this might soon lose relevance the way it is being abused.

There's nothing he's saying that ordinary Nigerians don't talk about in public buses and bars. The only difference is that he's using social media and his exposure to celebrities to propagate change. Everybody can't stand and watch nonsense going on.

So she can afford to pay 1million to bloggers but arguing over 5000 naira? What kinda bloody nonesensical crap is that?

It's very wrong to pay money to any staff over the govt. This is why corruption thrive. If AIRPORT, SEA PORT AND LAND BORDER staffs and agencies don't have business with anything that has to do with money as income for the government 90 percent of diligence at work will be seen as those with only passion will apply to work. Excess luggage is charged by the airline base on the weight too. I just don't understand why up till date too many hands are collecting income for the govt. There is NPA, IMMIGRATION, FIRS, FAAN, ETC. Someone buys goods in Turkey for 5m and pays duty of 2m why won't the importer sell on a high price base on the duty.

For years they have been abusing passengers from Asia at different entry points in Nigeria. I have had a big bag that took my days to pack, thrown all over the place at MMI some years back by custom agents, who wanted me to pay "duties" for personal belongings and gifts! Ofcourse i stood my ground and nothing happened.

Every sector in Nigeria needs a purge ...nick one VDM
