If Ironsi ended regional government, how come he was on a visit to the southwest region?
Gowon created states and thus ended regional government system in Nigeria.

Ironsi already abrogated the resources of all the regions to the centre, thereby ending the regional autonomy. It is called unification decree for a reason. Gowon acted on what was on ground already.

Aguiyi Ironsi abolished regionalism and resource control...Gowon, out of necessity due to Ojukwu's rebellion, further buried it by breaking it up into 12 states.

They never knew that the age of social media would one day come, and Gowons Decree 14 would be exposed to the world, saying :

There shall , on commencement of this Decree, be created out of the Regions, States to be known by the names in column of 1 of the Shedule of this Decree

So why would Gowon be creating 12 states out of 4 Regions already abolished by Ironsi?

What exactly is your point? That Ironsi did not make that broadcast that effectively abolished regionalism? That Ironsi didn't claim that "regionalism is the bane of Nigeria"?

What then was the purpose of his du.mb decree 34 a.k.a unification decree? what was Ironsi trying to unify? And why? Who asked him for unity? And when?

By the time gowon came onboard, there were no regions in the right and original sense of the word rather, they were just redundant means of classification. They have lost their autonomy under Ironsi's decree 34.
