The thing is, petrol costs money to make, and government over the decades has been protecting us with subsidy after subsidy. Problem was, the subsides contributed not only to making our debt bigger, but feeding a subsidy monster that spawned corruptiuon and the wreckage of our refineries, leading to the mess that is now taking time to fix

At the end, even with the mass corruption and mess, if we stopped corurption, the amount we would spend in subsidy is larger than what we would recover from ending corruption

So, here we are. It's kind of the end of the road.
