I’m currently doing an online program that requires a fair bit of research, so after work today, I thought, "Why not hit up my usual spot?" There’s this bar I like on Abiola Way in Abeokuta, where I can just relax with a beer and get some work done. So I packed my laptop and headed over, settled into a quiet corner, and got to it.

After a sip or two of cold beer, I could feel the creative juices kicking in. Call it motivation, creativity, or maybe just a little buzz, but whatever it was, it was working. I was really in the zone. Then, out of nowhere, I noticed a sign on the wall: “Rooms Available for Lodging.” Now that was new! I’ve been coming here forever, and I’d never seen that before. It got me curious.

As I continued working, I caught sight of a guy coming out from a door in the back. Ghen ghen! At first, I assumed it was the VIP section. But then, right after him, a girl slipped out, looking around shiftily. She lingered for a second, as if she was waiting to make sure no one was watching, then headed for the exit.

I decided to keep observing. Sure enough, every few minutes, a similar scene played out: a guy would come through that door, then a girl would follow, always with that same cautious look. One girl, in particular, caught my attention. She came out behind this much older man. He didn’t waste any time—jumped right into his car and drove off. But the girl? She hung back by the entrance, pretending to scroll on her phone, glancing left, right, and back again. Once she thought the coast was clear, she slipped out and practically sprinted to the gate.

Just as I was about to wrap it up and leave, I saw another figure come out from that same door. This time, it was a woman—mid-30s, dressed in a sharp outfit that looked expensive. She had that polished look, like someone’s wife, maybe even a mom. She straightened her blouse, smoothed her hair, and casually walked out, flashing a forced smile at a passing waiter, who nodded as if he understood the whole arrangement.

My mind went blank for a second. If even women like her were involved in this, then society really was losing its grip. Maybe it’s the economy—everything is so tough these days that people are turning to anything to get by. It’s not just young girls anymore; you see all kinds of people doing “hookup” just to stay afloat.

I shook my head. Truly, Nigeria don spoil. No way I was sticking around. I closed my laptop, paid up, and left.
