Bishop David Oyedepo, Chancellor and Chairman of the Board of Regents of Covenant University, and founder of the Living Faith Church Worldwide, revealed that he had understudied nine world-class foreign universities, including Harvard, Princeton, Yale, Columbia, Caltech, MIT, Stanford, Duke, and Dartmouth, to establish Covenant University.


Covenant University, founded by Oyedepo, has achieved a remarkable milestone, emerging as Nigeria’s best and sixth in West Africa and Sub-Saharan Africa in the Times Higher Education World Universities Ranking 2025.

The university’s impressive ranking was announced during its 19th Convocation ceremony held at its campus in Ota, Ogun State.

Oyedepo leveraged the insights gained from these institutions to craft the university’s core values, resulting in unique products.

According to him, this strategic approach has paid off, as Covenant University solidifies its position as a leading institution in Nigeria and West Africa, providing students with top-notch education.

He said, “While nothing was copied, a lot of inspiration was drawn from those studies, which eventually led to the crafting of our core values, making our products very unique.”

“My passion came alive to provide an alternative education, in terms of quality, that would rescue these young individuals from lifelong crises.”

For a Convent University established in 2002 to topple a University of Ibadan established in 1948, it shows that government has no business running any business in Nigeria.

Oyedepo is truly a Great Man.

I like the fact that he does NOT associate with FAILURES like Buhari and Tinibu of APC.

You are saying this because u have problem with the founder.why not mention the university you graduated from and let see how the research work from thr is different from the ones from other schools.You think the ratings was done by fish brain or nigeria politicians/inec/police.I am proud to see ABU second.

Mr man, ranking has to place more emphasis on research output as it is a higher and surer way of demonstrating advancement of the body of knowledge. Universities, primarily, advance body of knowledge and disseminate knowledge. Any reasonable academician will agree advancement has to take place before what has been advanced can be disseminated.

If truly the Nigerian public schools have better teachers or lecturers, why are the final product inferior to so many others? Why do they take pride in churning out failures? Why do lecturers treat students as rivals? Why isnt it translating into competence on a global scale or in civil service?

To start with, most Nigerian schools are centered around degree award and so have exceedingly large departments for mundane programs that are oversaturated in the labour market already. Marketting, Business Admin, law, accounting, intl relations. Fields where research hardly holds prospect of producing impactful outcomes. Fields where it is relative easier to make better grades. It is more about fulfilling aspiration to be graduates for most than advancement of knowledge.

Trying to place dissemination of knowledge side by side with advancement of same, like comparing the girl who pounds yam and cassava in a restaurant to the person who cooks the soup and makes the variety of dishes from start to end. One is a repetitive and largely passive while the other is more creative and expository.
