It was different. Sepsis can be misdiagnosed by even the best doctors. There are no obvious symptoms sometimes until it is too late.

Our hospitals in this country is so wack. You'll even come in with an emergency and the nurses and doctors will be acting sluggishly as if you're disturbing them or they're not being paid for the job they're doing. I was in one of these government hospitals some years back and a patient came in bleeding from his head due to an accident. The nurse on duty was basically eating and told them to wait till she finishes her meal.

In this case it was obvious the girl had pneumonia. She was in severe pain, yet some hospital staff accused her of faking the pain. By the time the pneumonia went to sepsis it was too too late.

The signs were acknowledged as a current viral symptom. They had no space in the hospital (am sure you know about the NHS issues) so they asked her to go home due to lack of hospital space for what they consider trivial illness due to symptoms almost like Group A Strep, A prevalent illness at the time and easily treatable by taking lots of fluids and ibuprofen. If they had space free, they would have kept her in the hospital and would have treated her when signs of sepsis started showing.
My point is that this case is different from the gross and plain negligence shown in this Nigerian Case.

The doctor that advised them to.go back home and use red oil deserves to be sacked and have his license withdrawn. In fact, he must be investigated to confirm if he ever studied medicine at all.



Hot water doesn't have much effects on toxic chemicals like cyanide, lead, DDT, arsenic etc unlike biological toxins caused by bacteria. Some bacteria so extremely heat resilient that water boiled at 100°C does not kill them. Now that the patients are all dead and the incompetent hospital staff refused to test them, we may never know exactly what poisoned then

Most non biological poisons can still be detected from the corpses. An autopsy is neccessary to rule out the possibility of criminal poisoning. The doctor who advised them to go home and use palm oil should be punished and re-educated.The hospital should urgently improve on its toxicology testing and treatment capacity. Quite a sad case.

Oga, healthcare in NIgeria is bad, but that does not mean that negligence is a sign of how bad it is.

The point is the "the number of preventable deaths" as NaijaCrusader pointed out. And I am sure you are aware that a process is then followed in the UK including conducting an inquest to learn the lessons and minimize a repeat occurrence.

We got a lot to do about healthcare in nigeria. But negligence in nigeria is not why our healthcare is bad. Poor funding, poorly trained staff, etc etc.
