Give The South East A Seaport And Watch Lagos Turn Into A Graveyard by Celestialsword(op): 6:14pm On Oct 13, 2024
Some Yoruba people have bragged about Igbo people being in Lagos, but they never knew that had it the Yoruba had not monopolised the seaport in Nigeria, no Igbo man would be in Lagos as Lagos would have turned into a graveyard.

Nigeria is a country where more than 200 million people make use of the Lagos seaport when it can be distributed among regions. There are seas with proximity to the ocean in Bayelsa, Calabar, Akwa Ibom, Warri, Anambra, Abia, and Imo, yet the Nigerian government has denied the East seaport.

Ndi Igbo being in Lagos is a plus to the Yoruba people. These Igbo people were denied seaports and forced to be in Lagos. As the highest importers in Nigeria, Ndị́ Igbo were forced to travel miles away from their homes to clear their goods. Many had lost these goods to bad federal roads in the East while bringing them down to Ịgbo land. Instead of losing goods all the time, they decided to lock up their shops in Onitsha and relocate to Lagos. Since then they are not only contributing to the IGR of Lagos, they are also developing Lagos.

Imagine a situation where Anambra or Warri, or even Abia or Akwa Ibom, have a working Seaport. Do you think our people will be trooping into Lagos? They will stay in their land and develop it.

If you take away the monopoly of seaports from Lagos, Lagos will lose its taste. That's because Igbo people will head home and replicate what you see in Lagos back home.

As an Igbo man, you must stop feeling that Yoruba people are doing you a favour because you are in Lagos. It is the other way around. You are the one doing them a favour. They connived with the Fulani to have the seaports to themselves.

When you say this they say don't you have seaport in Warri and Calabar. Funny people. This is how they do it. They will make sure you pay more if you decide to use Calabar or Warri seaports. They will also use their men in charge of those places to frustrate your goods. By the time your goods spend 6 months without clearing it, you will learn to use Lagos seaport. If you are from Warri or Calabar and you claim you have a seaport, then you are a clọ́wn.

Are you for real?
Ibadan didnt have a seaport during regionalism but it became the richest, most developed and most progressive...all of these even than Lagos....in Nigeria even West Africa.
Ibadan was where your ancestors were fleeing to then until envy and jealousy covered your people's eyes making Ironsi enact decree 34 and unitary system of govt was birthed.
Gowon rode on this to create 12 states until Nigeria finds itself in this sorry state.

The problem with your people is laziness and incompetence not only seaport.
There are places without seaports and they are progressive.

The federal government have been using a cocktail of policies and smear tactics to discourage the usage of the eastern ports since 1970. This inspite of the fact that over 65% of all containers imported into the country, end up at either Onitsha, Nnewi or Aba.

There are goods that must be imported from Lagos since the end of the war and there are additional charges on freights heading to the east, which makes the total freight charges to Onne and Calabar to be higher than that of Lagos thereby forcing importers from the east to use Lagos in orderto make profits from thier imports.

Again, most ships must first stop at Lagos before heading to the east. This adds to the final charges thereby making it costlier for businesses to import through the badly maintained eastern ports.

Lagos needs to be quickly dicongested. It is obvious that the yorubas are getring tired of the igbos, and in so many ways, they are feeling being swamped by other Nigerians, especially the igbos. Since most igbos come to Lagos basically for import related businesses and untill recently, for flying out of the country, adequate measures should be quickly taken to open up eastern ports so that everyone will feel relaxed and safe in their neighbourhoods

It has nothing to do with arms importation. Its nothing but an apartheid policy. It is not the easterners that appoint the custom officers at the seaports whose job it is to check imported consignments. It is the federal government that does that, and you and i know who dominates that agency. The noise the other day about arms importation through the Onne port, was one of those scare tactics used to render eastern ports comatose anytime they start picking up serious activities.

I mean the arms confiscated are the normal double barrel guns used by almost everyone in Nigeria. Such has been confiacted endless times at Lagos, but it wasn't used as an excuse to maling the Lagos ports. As per your jibe about another project like the second Niger bridge after 50 years, i will reply you when Oshogbo or your Abeokuta starts to trash Onitsha and Aba .

Other States are building their own ports with their own money, but the supposedly richest people, the smartest, the most industrious and the superior race in black Africa cannot join money together to build a seaport.

If it's not begging and wailing for the FG to do everything for them, it's emotional blackmail and empty boasting.

What Are we debating here exactly?

That it's cheaper to clear your goods in Lagos and that this was/is as a result of federal government policies post 1979?

That almost 70% of the containers cleared in different Nigerian ports in Nigeria, end up in the south east?

That if it was cheaper to clear in the eastern ports, these south-east businesses would have utilised these ports near to them?

Or are you trying to say that these eastern businesses come to clear their good in Lagos because they want to snatch your Lagos from you?
