Rattlesnakes are endemic to the Americas, from Canada in North down to SW and Eastern US to Northern Mexico and Northern South America.
They are not native to the Old World which includes Africa, Asia and Europe.
Rattlesnakes are a unique group of vipers notable for the rattling noise they make by shaking their modified tails rapidly.
They rattle when provoked or disturbed,as a warning before striking and delivering their highly venomous bite.
There are more than 70 species and subspecies of rattlesnakes, all of them found exclusively in the Americas.
Nearly all species possess haemotoxic venom which attacks the blood and blood vessels, but the Eastern Diamondback, Western Diamondback and the Mojave rattlesnakes are extremely venomous, armed with neurotoxic venom.
Back to the main issue, the snake in the picture is not a rattlesnake but a puff adder .
The puff adder possesses a cytotoxic venom which destroys tissues and cells and comes in a variety of colours and subspecies.
Like the rattlesnakes, puffadders can sense the body heat of warm blooded prey like mammals and birds.
Other snakes that sense body heat include Pythons, pit vipers of Asia and the Americas, and the boas which include the world's heaviest snake _the green anaconda.
