Building Collapse: LASG says No cause for alarm, 'we have evacuated the occupants long before now' GM LASBCA

Says, collapsed building among the listed distressed buildings by government

Following the collapse of a 2 storey building at No. 20 Amusu Street, Moshalasi, Apapa, Sari Iganmu early this morning, the State government has assured the public that there was no cause for alarm , as the collapsed building was already identified as a distressed building by the Lagos State Building Control Agency, LASBCA.

LASBCA General Manager, Arc . Gbolahan Oki who gave the assurance , explained that the building was among the compendium identified by his agency as distressed and occupants were evacuated long before now.

Oki added that statutory notices were served on the owners and occupants of the building prior to the collapse, adding that the Agency had already evacuated all the occupants of the building before it collapsed, stressing further that there was no single casualty.

Oki while reaffirming government commitment to Safety of Lives and Property of the residents, warned people in the building industry to follow the government laid down regulations and procedures while building.

He said his Agency will continue to carry out the present administration's reform policies on construction to put a permanent stop to building collapse in the State.

While noting that the incident did not record any casualties because of the proactive measures put in place by the State government, Oki urged residents of the area not to panic but go about their normal businesses, stating that relevant agencies of government are already at work to clear the debris as there was no casualty.

The General Manager urged people to support the State government's reform efforts in the Built Industry so as to reduce incidents of building collapse to a barest minimum in the State.

He urged the public to assist the State government by reporting cases of distressed buildings in their communities to the appropriate authorities, calling on those in the Built Industry to ensure that they do not compromise standards in the choice of materials they use for construction.

He further disclosed that occupants of other distressed buildings in the State have been advised to relocate to safer places to allow for demolition of such distressed buildings for safety of lives and properties.

This is why standards must be adhered to... If you build a rubbish structure, it will be demolished to avoid loss of lives... If you build on the canals or drainage without doing your own due diligence before buying the land, you don enter one chance...

Good one from LASBCA.

But why was the building not cordoned from the public since it has been marked as distressed?

From the video, Korope bus could be seen parked closed to the building, while crowds could were monitoring and recording

Lagos is congested as much as the number of people living in a building. Many of the houses were either illegally built or built without permits.

You're right... but at least they made sure people evacuated the building, that's a win in my own opinion. I believe nobody died, so I'm glad.

Lagos and building collapse
Handiwork of estate developers... Once you see houses with brown, swollen decking that looks like cement was economized, just know it's one of them.

The truth is that most of those structures were erected over 2 to 3 decades ago when the previous governments hadn't faced issues of building collapse.

When we see a good job we commend them... they can't be 100% perfect but the did good
Some people will still call their caution a bluff nd sell there or park vehicles around there it's ignorance.. overall they did good by evacuating the residents

After the demolition of the building, who will now own the land back? Governor, government or the primary owner?

Good. Lagos is the only state trying to meet up a little with global standard. Though there is still a lot to do if it is to be considered a modern city.

Nothing will give me more joy than seeing other states trying to modernise and be proactive. Most governors are just squandering their resources.

In the video and these pictures, you'd notice the collapsed structure was patched with the main building.

I wonder who does such a thing knowing it's a huge risk!
Re: Building Collpase: LASG Says No Cause For Alarm by Gadafii: 6:26am On Oct 15, 2024
Most houses for that axis, orile igamu to Lagos island are disasters waiting to happen, many of them are as old as the Methuselah, but kept being patched while there are evidence of decay and cracks around it.

While Lagos state govt was busy puking down structures blocking drainage, they ignore these type of structures that pose more disaster than the ones they pulled down.

Then you wonder how honest the govt really is about these things
