In Nigeria, a Research Project is nothing but an activity for most students, you can write anything & submit it; your supervisor does not even have time for you. In the UK, US and other universities, a Research Project is a way to prove that you have gained knowledge, solve real-world problems & contribute to the overall body of literature. So, what is the difference in approach? For most Nigerian university students and other African university students inclusive, the process involves (Note. Do not follow this wrong style): Step 1: Look for someone else's topic and copy it or use AI to create a topic. Step 2: Copy the content & send it to your supervisor (they can’t detect if it is copied, nobody has the time to check the work using plagiarism detectors at any time) Step 3: Or, use Chat GPT, Bard or other tools to create the content and generate fake references, then send it to your supervisor (they would not check, they don't care and cannot even detect it despite different AI tools) Step 4: Finish the work and then submit it to the school. You don’t need to worry; you’d be awarded good grades, but this is laughable. For universities abroad, in the UK, US, Canada and other countries, there is an emphasis on academic quality. Hence, the process below applies: Step A: The student conducts research to verify a problem, confirm the position of previous researchers, and consider their approach. Step B: They come up with potential topics that they can share with their supervisors. The discussion with supervisors helps to clarify thoughts and ensure that they are focused and can deliver the work. Step C: The student writes a concise research proposal which will be critically appraised and approved to give them a go-ahead. Other considerations like research ethics (to protect participants), participant info sheet and others will be addressed. Step D: The student commences the work, doing real-world research, searching databases, reading materials, critiquing literature, developing strong arguments, etc. This will be intermittently shared with the supervisor and objective critical feedback will be given. Note: Use of AI & Plagiarism of work is forbidden. Tools like Turnitin are used to detect Plagiarism and AI content. Step E: The research is mostly actually conducted, whether it is primary or secondary methodologies are implemented to the later. Data analysis is not petty, strong descriptive and inferential analysis will be required. In conclusion: - The difference explains why some Nigerian university students who even have an MSC do not have strong research competencies. - The insight of students in foreign universities is quite different, they understand that research is a learning curve, an impactful activity and one where they get to demonstrate what they have learnt in solving real-world problems. Natbrowny:It's another big problem. Before I started criticising, a proposal was sent to the authorities to create a system for maximising research reports and we even went there for a meeting, but typical of Nigeria, the feedback was that schools can do whatever they like with their research and such; it became clear to my team that nobody actually cares. But we must get it right by force. |

Newsmills:Lol, Nairaland has provided an opportunity for me and my team to provide research services since 2014 if I remember correctly. If I do not stand for integrity, then same Nairaland could have been filled with stories of such. ON THE CONTRARY, I HAVE BEEN DEFRAUDED AND SCAMMED BY NIGERIANS IN DIFFERENT WAYS: 1. Because of trust issue, we started with a module of work on a part, send it for payment and work on other parts. Funny Nigerians, they pet you to work on a part, once you deliver, that is the end, you will chase them until you give up. Lack of integrity at work. 2. Some use the pretext of rubbishing the work done for them - so you provide quality contents and most of your clients in international universities end up with distinction because of collaboration. However, some smart Nigerians after getting the work will bring 1.5 million complain as excuse not to pay. Then you bid them farewell; guess what, they send what you have done to someone else to CONTINUE with the next step, telling the person that they have finished this part and its all good - Then, the person they give it to end up contacting us to subcontract the work to us and we now find out that Nigerians are at their games. Most times, such persons who subcontract to us is warned but they don't listen, they even go to pay out of their pocket with expectation that the person will pay them, boom, they end up getting scammed. 3. The third one is the very emotional trick, mostly used by women. They pet you, sing praises, tell you that they go to XYZ church and paint a profile that they are not. Then motivate you to send the work, giving you instances where people duped them; fine, you end up sending the work and when they need to pay, they beg for an elongated period to pay back, they have not gotten salary, they need this or that. When its time for them to pay, they come up with excuse, their mother is dead, they lost their job,, bottomline, the work is gone. So how do we treat this? 1. Simple, we carry the work and sell it on sites where research work can be sold. 2. We publish the work as our own to boost our online research profile. 3. THIS IS THE PART THAT MOST INDIAN WRITERS USE BASED ON FEEDBACK FROM SOME CLIENTS WHICH WE MAY SUBSEQUENTLY EXPLORE- They write to the school with the client detail to complain and cast the whole thing; the bagger may be investigated and have their admission terminated. HOWEVER, because of fear of God, we have not explored this option. So forget about being fraudulent, people doing genuine business in Nigeria especially relating to creative and research services suffer a lot in the hand of 'dem*ns' who do not know the importance of quality work, the cost of producing effective content and the extent of work invested in these things. If you are a man or woman of integrity, by all means, we will be happy to work effectively with you irrespective of your race, tribe, creed and colour. |
