Stocks or shares are determined by volume

You guys are lucky as the share value already dropped as at that time - your dad bought cheap.
I bought mine before then and it turned out to be the ultimate Scam - the moment Baba Iyabo moved his money, it crumbled. Transcorp then was promising because of Obasanjo - it would've performed if he got third term. Stock pros in-house, correct me if I'm wrong oo.
I think I bought for 20naira per share back then.
There was never a time Obasanjo put his money in Transcorp and withdrew same . This is just an unfounded rumour.

Transcorp only seized the opportunity of the shares public offering of that time even without the solid fundamentals to support the public offer price the shares sold for. Besides, it was the cowboys at the time that packaged it for the public to chew

crypto is a scam as well for the future...MMM

thesicilian:
He didn't buy much shares to begin with, considering the price then in 2013 was just N1.65 per share (from a quick Google search) resulting in a total of N1732.5 for his 1050 shares. That seemed like a trial purchase rather than a solid investment for the future.
If he had put that money into crypto then I'm sure the return on investment would be in millions by now.

Let's assume in 2009, someone purchased 2,000,000 shares at the rate of N2. This will be a total of N4M invested.

In 2024 which is 15 years later, the shares is currently at N11.
2,000,000 share = N22M + those petty dividends they paid.

Looks like a good investment.

Let's look at what who held dollar would have made just by putting N4M into dollars in 2009 when dollar was $150.

4,000,00 ÷ 150 = $26,666

In 2024, $1 = 1650

$26,666 x 1650 = N43, 998,900 (that's roughly twice the amount from shares in that company)

What about who gambled on BTC?

In 2009 bitcoin was $0.10 cheesy

Just $1,000 would have given you 10,000BTC

In 2024, 10,000BTC = $672,344,400. grin grin grin

Only if we can see the future
No reasonable investor will tie down a whole N4m down since 1999 or whatever year you are quoting till date .

Investments don't work that way. Only analysis does.

If only you know what N1M is then.

Stop buying these over valued shares Nd stop keeping your money in naira. Learn how to store it in USDt and USDC using binance smartchain, SOLANA blockchain, TON and Sui blockchain. A word of caution: Never store your recovery phrase online.

Buying and holding Nigerian stocks and shares is an exercise in futility and a waste of time.

You will do better to buy USD /GBP Foat & Hold.
Are you suggesting, assuming, projecting or confirming this assumption?

Educate yourself please.

For a quick check, ask anyone who bought at least 10,000 units of GT shares during the public offer at N10.90 before replying Mr.

My Dad bought about 1050 units of Transcorp share in 2013. He lost the certificate so he forget about the shares.
Until the second quarter of this year when someone told us about this link to apply for unclaimed dividends.

2018- N28.35
2019- N9.45
2020- N9.45
2021- N18. 9
2022- N47. 25
2023-N94.5

I agree with you. There's so much 'insider trading' and the regulatory authorities give a 'blind eye' to such.

His father was lucky to have gotten his share certificate to start with.

I bought the shares of same Transcorps, no certificate, no refund, no dividend.

I've stopped buying shares since bcoz it's a scam.
Sad, a 'smart alec' must have gotten hold of it; and, probably 'sold' it off.

Some company shares are just useless. 11years investment no even reach up to N1k
You guys don't know the difference between shares and dividends, yet you rush to comment.

Dividends per share in Nigeria is usually between 1kobo to 2naira, and so, the total amount earned will depend on the quantity of shares the person is holding.

Even if Transcorp pay the highest dividends of 2naira per share, someone who's holding a total shares of just 1050 like the Op's Dad can't still hammer from it. He'll get only 2x1050= 2100 per year. And I'm sure Transcorp can even pay upto that 2naira per share.
Only Zenith, Gtb, etc, can pay upto that amount of dividends per share.

Not good enough...if u see the way Herbert of blessed memory and Tony and his wife buys shares you will realise they buy in billions which is on the High side, but I advise you start from hundreds of thousand of shares to millions of shares. Cos most nigerian companies dividend are in kobos/shares so you need a lot of shares to get something tangible.
Sir, same thing happened to close relatives who are old now. Buying Nigerian shares that will not lead to owning at least 5 percent of the total value of the company is like dashing the company your money. Invest in crypto instead.

The problem with people and investments is not doing proper research. Consider this. Most shares globally pay annual dividend of between 1-15% (when they pay oo!!) This also applies to the biggest companies in Nigeria. Some do not even pay if they've had a bad year of trading.
Also consider that percentage payment is not fixed and can flucuate year on year. Meaning some years they'll pay less and some years they'll pay more.

So for example if you buy shares worth of N100,000. Your yearly return will be between N1000 to N15,000 on average.Dependent on the company's performance that year.

Bear in mind percentage payment is dependent on share value!!! If the value goes up percentage return is high. If the share value goes down percentage is low. So technically speaking you can even lose most of your money.

The only people making real money from shares are those investing N10Million to N100 Million or more. In my opinion if you do not have several millions you are not using to spare it's not worth the effort. Because its an unguaranteed gamble. It's better to invest in government bonds or treasury bills or my personal favourite Property.
