African billionaire Aliko Dangote is wealthier than ever now that his long-awaited Nigerian oil refinery is up and running. But his mood suggests a man who just built his dream house only for the roof to start leaking. The Dangote Refinery outside Lagos is the biggest single-train oil refinery in the world and one of the most complex, capable of processing most global crude types. It has the potential to transform Nigeria’s economy by making the country self-reliant for fuel. And it’s more than doubled his net worth to $27.8 billion, according to the Bloomberg Billionaires Index. He said he wouldn’t wish the experience on his worst enemy. “I didn’t know what we were building was a monster,” Dangote, 67, said during a recent visit to New York. “The pressure was coming from different directions, people confusing us, disturbing us every day with different media stories that it will never work, it will never work, it will never work.” Since the refinery started running in January, there have been disagreements with the government and state oil company, as well as concerns over its impact on locals and the environment. Dangote is smarting from the blowback, his tone quickly shifting from warm to bitter as he runs through the challenges. For Dangote, who made his first billions in cement, the refinery was the most audacious undertaking of his 46-year career. Building it took 11 years and $20 billion, three-and-a-half times as long and more than twice as much as initially planned. He financed most of it himself. EmperorCaesar:Building that refinery took 11 whole years, started under GEJ. Now, you are giving the credit to some bat🦇. You guys are truly thoughtless. Or, have you become successful by seeing opportunity in Tinubu's bad policies and taking advantage of it to earn 30k by posting these? How much have you earned from taking advantage of our suffering? |

Once it started running. The value was added to his net worth. It means if Nigeria is to be sold today. All the incomplete projects are a minus to our net worth. |

Resurrection212:yes now. Someone just finished his mansion ans the least you expect is for that mansion not to be considered part of his net worth. Before completion, it was just a project no one knows if it will ever be completwd and so count as an asset. Now it is running, it has to be added to his value. |

Chikel20000:Tinubu rid Nigeria of the useless subsidy that has kept Nigeria poor for the past 30 years. With the subsidy and socialist economy we have been running, has it made Nigeria and Nigerians rich? No. Now Tinubu removing subsidy is taking a heavy toll on the poor as usual, but it is the immediate pain that needs to be felt. I just want his government to ensure people don’t suffer this pain for nothing coz the fiscal side is still lacking a bit. But it is the best policy needed for Nigeria economic survival into the next decade. |

EmperorCaesar:Dangote's wealth is his personal wealth. Where is Portharcourt refinery that should be ready by December last year? Tinubu, the disaster is minister of petroleum. And he can't make any of government owned refinery work. Babablu bulabu.... |

I remember when some hoebidient crew were doing asset comparison of Dangotte under PDP and Dangotte under APC just because it was reported then that his net worth had reduced. I wonder if they will attempt to do a comparison this time or they will come up with something negative again |

LegendHero:Askari Legendhero, bag of rice is 100k as we speak. Kindly confirm from your people in Nigeria if I'm lying. Nigerians haven't been this poor. It wasn't bad like this during Buhari's administration. Always get in touch with reality with your comments |
| Re: Dangote’s Wealth Doubles To $28 Billion On ‘monster’ Nigeria Oil Project by LegendHero(op): 1:47pm On Oct 17, 2024 |
jmoore:Yes, he attacked Jonathan because in Nigeria, we play politics of bitterness. Thats exactly why Peter Obi that campaigned on subsidy removal and liberalizing FX market is now changing mouth that government should borrow to defend naira. Same way Atiku is now changing mouth. The goal of opposition is always to frustrate and condemn all policy of the ruling party. However, as a president, you must be bold to follow through your plan irrespective of what opposition says. That’s where Jonathan was a weakling, he should have stood firm then. |

Beremx:See Nigeria have always been poor. Most Nigerian family cannot afford 1 bag of rice right from time. How many families Dey buy bag of rice at once? No be derica we dey buy? It will continue to be bad if we retain that useless subsidy. Ever since I was born, Nigeria have always been crying about poverty poverty poverty. It will continue to be worse if we keep repeating same nonsense. We said Jonathan was worse; Buhari came, we said ahhh Buhari is worser o; now Tinubu came, we are saying Buhari is better. Haven’t you seen the trajectory? Next president will be worse than Tinubu if Tinubu also continue that useless subsidy. At least during Tinubu, we know we are suffering in the interim coz of subsidy removal. Everyday na rice rice rice like people possessed. Any small thing rice, maybe na why Tpain Dey share rice be that. By the way, government need to allow food imports as a short term reprieve to the masses until we get the security and supply side right. |

LegendHero:What kind of mentality is this? Making life harder is not how you start economic recovery 😂. It’s like you chop off the leg or arm of an injured person and expect them to grow it back. Nigeria’s best chance was under Jonathan and now that’s gone. |
