LAGOS – The Oyo State government has vowed to intensify efforts and align with its 2022 roadmap to attain Open Defecation-Free (ODF) status objective by 2028.

Recall that in the southwest, Oyo State currently leads in the open defecation menace with 54% of its eight million population engaging in the act; according to the National Bureau of Statistics.

`Ekiti State is the second in the region with 41% of its population engaging in open defecation .

It is followed by Ondo at 39%, Osun at 18%; Ogun stands at 14% while Lagos State is the lowest with (three) 3%.

The 2021 Water Sanitation and Hygiene National Outcome Routine Mapping (WASHNORM) report also revealed that about 5,020,920 residents, representing 53.7 percent of the total population in Oyo State, practice open defecation, while about 3,621,520, representing 43 percent use unimproved toilet facilities.

The report also disclosed that only 8.4 percent of households have access to basic hand-washing services.

Just across the fence your neighbor's soak away might be closer to your borehole than you think. Any state governor that can not provide at least 70% public water scheme for his state is useless and dangerous

The report isn't disputing the availability of private boreholes as highlighted by your mention rather most subsurface or surface water in Abia has been contaminated by faeces. Now, that's not an attack on Abians but a call to action from every stakeholders in the state
