Why Is A Bag Of Rice 97,000? Why Does it Keep Increasing? by Originakalokalo(op): 4:00pm On Oct 19, 2024
Please, I am a bit confused...Why is the bag of Rice 97,000 and why does it keep increasing?

What is the government doing to arrest this?

Are they aware?

Is this caused by greedy farmers? Low supply? Bad policies?

Rice apart, where is the import duty removal on food?

Why is food becoming a commodity so expensive that a common man cannot afford it?

Please if you have answers, kindly respond...

Tinubu does not understand that no matter how important his so called economic policies/changes/reforms are, making sure that the people don't go to bed hungry, should be even far more important. Economic reforms are intended to better the lives of the people and not to kill them. Bulaba does not grasp this, and no one around him seem to have the boldness to tell him the uncomfortable truth.

As for local rice farmers, breeze don blow and we don see fowl nyansh. No one is as greedy as rice farmers and Dangote in this country. This astronomical increases in the prices of rice, started during the time of buhari, when borders were closed to help them. Instrad of maintaining a reasonable price regime, what they did was to start hiking prices arbitrarily. I mean local rice farmers. They now want to sell at a costlier price than the imported brands and Tinubu is still daft enough not to drastically reduce tariffs on rice imports.

Your government is playing on you all the same game that IBB played on Nigerians during SAP. IBB lied that he was busy implementing SAP reforms when in fact he was instead busy looting Nigeria's oil money and blaming all the suffering that resulted on SAP and IMF. This present government is running the same scam on the Nigerian people. It is busy looting Nigeria's resources— since they don loot the money finish— while it continues to lie to you that it is working on reforms on which it then has you blaming your sufferings on. undecided

There are no economic reforms going on. Reforms should make your lives better and not worst. Do you think citizens of other countries will stand by while their lives get worst and their government claims they are reforming the economy. Nigeria is dead and buried under tinubu. I only pity children being born in Nigeria because the future is super bleak

Unless the Federal government unfloats the currency ..rice will become 200k before the ens of 2025......

Even great China doesn't run a free floating currency.....even the United states subsidizes petrol..........but Nigeria that runs a heavily import-reliant economy thought it will be okay to float it's naira...
.....all for what?? To claim they are returning money the IMF so that they can have more allowance to borrow for the rulling class to live in luxury....
. In summary...the masses are paying heavily to fund the excesses of the government... If u can get out of Nigeria......get the fvck out because it will only get worse

At this point, I think opening the border should be top priority.

Getting out is not as cheap as it used to be especially because of the price of dollar.

I think majority are stuck here ....

Greed can also be a contributing factor to what we are experiencing.

Who will rescue Nigeria?

Lets look at it this way; how many people are involved in rice farming in Nigeria?? Up to 100k citizens? What do they do with their excess profits? Build factories and industries? No! Create morw high paying jobs? I'm not seeing it. Or marry new wives, then go to upper and lesser hajj, maybe then buy new cars and mansionshuh

Compare that with this;

How many people consume rice in Nigeria? Obviously, hundreds of millions of people . Its a staple that is eaten by almost every healthy Nigerian on a daily basis. That means hundreds of millions of consumers and thousands of retailers and wholesalers.

So, for how long will the government contineu to caliberate economic policies that only carter to the well being of a few thousand greedy farmers , while millions of citizens go hungry? They don't even pay taxes! I mean the socalled farmers. They just grab grab grab and grab.

And if all they do is to buy foreign commodities and properties abroad with their profits, such behaviour still instigates capital flight. If the rice farmers are not willing to drastically reduce their prices, the border should be thrown wide open for big rice imports. We should all not die because we want to help some ruthless rice farners.

Interesting. So you don't want the World Bank to lend Nigeria money? How do you intend for Nigeria to be at least able to pay the salaries of FG, State and LG workers at this point in time? Let's hear your ideas. undecided

Exactly.

This makes sense.

Now, who is advising this people?

Who will tell them the truth?

Things cannot continue like this!!!!!

Simple answer

Nigeria population is less productive and more than available resources.

While Thailand was using their land and God given rain to plant rice Nigeria is busy doing nothing, but importing

Your question should be is Nigeria so lazy that it can't feed herself
Ask your economic teacher a bout demand and supply

When demand is more than supply price must go up.

This is not laziness.

Insecurity has stopped a lot of famers from farming.

Borrowing money to farm and bandits come calling or herdsmen's cow eating the produce....?

The government should stop deceiving itself and tackle insecurity....In the meantime, the border should be opened for food importation....at least for now....

Government said they have decided to remove import duty on Food....that was weeks ago....

This has not been done... This path is dangerous....

It's just a decision borne out of being clueless, no real economy improvement strategy to run the economy...its business as usual for them to steal, embezzle, and steal some thru borrowing from IMF and fronting bogus projects, and palliatives...

when u want to continuously borrow money from IMF u will have to dance to the tune of IMF.......and IMF is full of business men who will lend u money to collect profit through ur oil revenue, or other means ....

No one will rescue Nigeria....Nigeria is designed to fund the excesses of the rulling class......the only thing the masses truly got from the government is subsidy on fuel and the naira.....

It's the wickedness of Nigerians you're witnessing.. Our people always want to take advantage of any situation to make excessive gains for themselves. Rice that shouldn't cost more than 45 - 50k due to concessions of FG (import duty waiver) is what some are selling for 90 - 105k.

This is why it will be very hard for the black man to develop.

Those causing this hardship by inflating prices of food items and other commodities are the same people you see in mosques praying 100 times a day, same people in the front row in churches dancing and doing all sort so people will assume they are pure and holy.

I don't think import duty has been removed yet...It is a master of we will....we will.

The Nigerian government needs to be responsible....this is too much.

Though I agree that Nigerians are greedy....

You must have the laziest brain around to accuse Nigerian of being lazy. Which Nigerians are lazy? How? The barrow pushers that toil from morning till night under the hot son? The herdsman that walks from Sokoto to Calabar on foot? I think that some of you just recklessly throw tags and jabs around like confetti.

How are Nigerians lazy and how is their socalled laziness effecting rice farming? Do you know what it takes to start rice farming? Do you know how much government incentives are given to farmers in those countries you mentioned? Do you know how the price of agro related products have risen because of tinubus ruthless new port tariffs?

Use fish farming as an example. Or even chicken farming. Go and ask the operators, how much they used to buy a bag of feed like ten years ago, and how much they buy those now. We have a Bank of Industries that lends to only one set of people. China has a specific Bank for Agriculture for farmers. They bankroll all of the farmers farming expenses and collect their money back at harvest.

Where are the dams and irrigations and cheap tractors and fertilisers and feeds, that are going to be used to make the farm produce cheap?

It has nothing to do with laziness. Everything to do with government confusion and ineffectiveness.

And what made it even worse is that, the masses who can't buy a 50kg bag but in bits(e.g. rubber which is a washing hand bowl size and about 1kg).

Someone mentioned the other time that a rubber of this rice is sold for N5k, now multiply same by 50kg and that is N250k.

That's a cool profit of at least N150k on 1 bag if you want to factor in like N3k for transportation.

Remember you're buying 50kg bag @N97k from around you and not far distance .
