Former President Olusegun Obasanjo on Saturday declared Nigeria has become a burial ground for policies, making the nation to take two steps forward and three steps backward.

The former President insisted that Nigeria is not short on policies to achieve greatness but regretted that the country has over time became a “burial ground of policies as a result of unimplemented and unexecuted policies “.

Obasanjo said: 'It is not enough for leaders to have policies or make statements. We are not short of policies in Nigeria. Unfortunately, Nigeria has become a burial ground of policies that are either unimplemented or unexecuted.'

'Those who make progress achieved progress, not on the basis of wishing to make progress, but on taking actions. They do not take two steps forward and three steps backward.

“Regrettably this is what we are doing in every aspect of our national life. And as long as we are doing things this way, progress will elude us. Let us carry the ones we can carry, we cannot be jack of all trade and master of none “

Obasanjo was Special Guest of Honour at the Olusegun Obasanjo Space Centre, Abuja, during the 8th Engr Brig Gen (rtd) Micheal Agu Annual Distinguished Lecture and Awards.

According to him, his administration had plans to launch its first Satellite in space by China, the second Satellite by Nigeria in collaboration with China and the third plan was to launch Nigeria Satellite in Space exclusively made by Nigeria.

The annual lecture and awards were organised under the auspices of the Nigerian Institution of Space Engineers with the theme:”Nigeria’s 21 years in space 2003-2024: Achievements, challenges and prospects.”

Obasanjo was presented an award as Grand Commander of Nigerian Space Exploration by organisers of the event.

He said when the National Space Research and Development Agency (NASRDA) was established by his administration, over 100 Nigerian engineers were sent to China for training in different categories and specialisations.

He regretted that progress was not made on the plans as he heard that at some point, NASRDA could not even pay its workers.

“Buhari is not a very hot person on the economy and foreign affairs,” Obasanjo said.

The former President stated this on Monday at the third International Conference on African Development Issues — themed, “Driving inclusive and sustainable development in Africa: Models, methods and policies” — organised by Covenant University, Ota, Ogun State.

While reacting to a question posed to him by a member of the audience: “Is there any hope for Nigeria under the administration of President Muhammadu Buhari?”, Obasanjo replied, “Is there any hope for Nigeria under this administration? I came back from Geneva, Switzerland a few days ago to attend a conference titled, ‘Are elections giving democracy a bad name?’ We had an election, we elected a leader and the good thing about democracy is that the power you have to elect a leader is also the power you have to remove him. I am saying this because I said earlier that if you don’t see any leader that has done well in the 56 years of Nigeria’s independence, then let us forget about Nigeria.

“I will tell you what I know and I will tell you what I don’t know. I know Gen. Muhammadu Buhari. He served under me in the military. His characteristics that I know, his behaviour that I know, he has not deviated from them. He was never a perfect man, he is not a perfect man and no leader can ever be a perfect man because they are human beings. But if you read my book, what I said about him is correct. He is not a hot person when it comes to economy. He is not a very hot person when it comes to foreign affairs. But he will do well in matters of military and he will do well in fighting Boko Haram.”

Nigeria is not working. The country needs to be seriously restructured in such a way that power will return to the regions,each region will control resources within it and pay a percentage to the federal government for defence and foreign affairs. Each region will also have its own police etc
