Some Obidients can be too sensitive for my liking.

Obi was just fulfilling all righteousness by felicitating with Gowon and I don’t think anybody should have issues with it.

If anything, Igbos who know history should be thankful to Gowon for how the war ended.

If not for Gowon, the Igbo haters from Awolowo camp and northern Muslims would have overrun the East and raze it ashes just to make sure Igbos never rise again.

It was Gowon’s policy of “No Victor, No Vanquished” that prevented that from happening. And those bloodsucking Igbo haters could only murmur from distance with their teeth all out like a rabid dog tasting for Igbo blood.

It was the anger of not letting Igbos be disappeared from the face of the earth that made Awolowo give every Igbo man 20 pounds after the war irrespective of how much he had in the bank before the war.

So, I understand that Gowon prosecuted the war against Biafra but those who understand leadership would know that Gowon was merely doing his job and not anything personal.

So, enough of the sulking by some Obidients. We can be more reasonable than that.
Look, let's stop kidding our selves here. Gowon directly caused the war by going back on the agreement he signed with Ojukwu in Ghana

I laugh when people say that Gowon fought to keep Nigeria one. Far from it, Gowon fought to make the North masters of Nigeria. Nigeria was already one before he broke the Aburi agreement that was meant to keep all 4 Region's in a loose federation that prevented domination.

People say that Gowon implemented No Victor no vanquished, did he have a choice? Does anyone think that the Western powers that gave Gowon weapons to fight, would have allowed him to commit genocide with the same weapons when the war was over?

Let's not also forgerlt that this same Gowon superintended over a period of Nigeria's largest oil boom, and left a legacy of corruption, financial recklessness and economic downturn

People can congratulate Gowon for reaching the milestone of 90 years if they wish, but there is nothing to celebrate about Gowon

A 9 year administration that saw thousands massacred in pogroms, millions killed in war, billions of Dollars in oil money but achieved nothing

What is there to celebrate about Gowon?

Peter Obi's supporters are the major reason why he would never be allowed to come close to Aso rock as a president. They are just too bitter and toxic
That's a dumb reason not to vote for him. We are voting for a leader who can move the country forward and not his supporters.

ERROR!

Peter Obi should be fighting for Biafra because he will NEVER be President of Nigeria.

You CANNOT want to be President of Nigeria and turn around to call the man who's responsible for the existence of Nigeria as it is an ENEMY.

Plus, talking about FORGIVING said enemy is STUPID.

The birthday wish was PRUDENT and STRATEGIC.
The explanation of the birthday wish is WEAK and STUPID.

Now, he has succeeded in OFFENDING and ALIENATING more people.

His birthday wish TRIGGERED some people.
His explanation and tacit retraction would TRIGGER another set of people.

Peter Obi is NOT a very smart person.

Smart people learn from their mistakes. He has NOT learned that Twitter is NOT real life. The results of the last general election showed that pepple who are LOUD and BOTHERED on social media do NOT necessarily translate to real life.

He should LEARN!
You're so right. That's why I call him Panderer Obi.

First and foremost, Peter Obi should stop deluding himself into believing he is a nationalist. Based on everything mentioned, it’s clear that the Obidients movement primarily serves an Igbo agenda.

I fail to understand why his supporters are upset with him for simply wishing a former president a happy birthday.
you got the Answer to why Obi's supporters are upset with him with your first paragraph , simple .The so-called Obidient movement is an agenda propagated mainly by people of the South eastern geo-political zone with the endgame of getting to the seat of power and control where , sadly , the other zones in Nigeria still don't trust ceding power to the tribe that tried to secede from the country .All their new-found nationalist facade from the face of the Agenda ( Obi) to the IBOdient on the street got just few of the rest of the Nigerian population fooled .
I'm tribal for voting Tinubu , but they're not in voting Obi ! Can you just imagine that ? ! Still a Wonder though where all the Atikulated votes from the South East in 2019 went in 2023 . Iguess Congratulations on two fronts are in order to the Nonegenerian former head of states , first , it's his ( Gowon ) birthday , but more telling , the General has exposed vanquished enemies of 54 years ago trying to sneak back in disguised as Obidients . And this time , a simple " CONGRATULATIONS " is all it took to expose their grand schemes to Nigerians .

It is funny that the same set of people that carried a coffin of a life president is using the word toxic. The set of people that burnt a woman alive because she has a different belief (Christianity), the same set of people that descend on Igbo shops to loot and burn it down...
Who in Nigeria will endure what these Igbo people have been through? Jonathan just completed Yaradua's and did a tenure the whole of northern Nigeria set for a war! Buhari/north did two tenures, the Southwest begin to sow the seed of separation in south under southern Nigerian unity! A forum renounced immediately it is my turn got his ticket.
A set of people that massacred their fellow country people during election in Lagos because they have a candidate of their choice is mentioning the word toxic! Go and look for the meaning that word again.

Gowon was not merely doing his job! You just painted him as a saint, though there are part of your statement that i subscribe to. The war was avoidable, stop the north that were killing the Igbos after Ironsi's coup. Since you can't protected them in the north, pay them their salaries. As the head of the state provide the body of Ironsi the former head of state for funeral. Honour the Aburi accord which you sign. Gowon could have averted the civil war. No good leader will be looking at his tribes men being slaughter in thousands and keep quiet. Ojukwu did what every good leader will do, self preservation.
Vo victor no vanquish was just a mere ceremony. You think Biafra just surrendered? You think there was no series of meeting going on during war by the two camp? You think Biafra surrendered because they were out of arms?
Gowon couldn't even fulfill his end war promise of triple 'R'. He needs to apologize to people of Asaba for that massacre of more than 1000 people who were killed even when they supported one Nigeria. Killing defenseless people who wear white cloth the symbol of peace.
Re: Peter Obi Explains Birthday Greetings To Gowon, Amid Uproar From Obidients by BENEAMATA: 10:38pm On Oct 20, 2024
And to reply a post above me , It was the late Ojukwu forcing Nigeria's hand with threat of secession that brought about last minutes meetings and hurriedly signed " accord "j ust in a desperate attempt to forestall an avoidable 30 months long war your John Rambo was bent on getting his way even if it meant bloodshed, just like some of his "commando " brothers just over a year prior did in putting a stop to our democracy with a constitution that totally recognises the REGIONALISM that Ojukwu was angling for in Aburi .- killing regional leaders while their own was on an overstayed medical leave ! Convenient uh ? And who suspended the constitution that allowed us to practice REGIONALISM for a centralised system of government ? Spoiler alert ; the head of states is not a " Wa" nor a " Zo " - you must be an old man now with a " walking stick " if you were around in '66 when they yanked off regionalism !

No justification for any war how much more the one that claimed millions of lives and ended lineages , the leaders on both sides were young and selfish , we should try and mend and look to the future instead of flogging the same old skewed and imbalanced revisionism depending on who's telling the history . God bless the dead

It's d non-igbo/igboid Obidients that are deluded into thinking that peter obi/labor party represent a national agenda.

Those who know, know the fact that the mentality of the average ignoman in 2024 is no different from their progenitors of 1966!

The same way as their 1966 progenitors 'whyned' the military officers of other regions into supporting the killings of their own political and military leaders while protecting their own political leaders from harm is the same way the present day Obidients camouflaged the peter obi project to seem like a nationalist agenda just to fool the non-igbo/igboid Obidients.

Re: Peter Obi Explains Birthday Greetings To Gowon, Amid Uproar From Obidients by Konquest:
fergie001:
Why I Congratulated Gen. Gowon at 90

My felicitation with Nigeria’s former military Head of state, General Yakubu Gowon, on his 90th birthday anniversary, which was celebrated by a cross-section of Nigerians, has been received with mixed feelings by some Nigerians, and some have expressed their sentiments publicly, and privately to me.

I share in some of them, and I feel that as a leader in the vanguard of providing direction for our country to shift base away from all our shortcomings, including the issues that caused our avoidable cruel civil war, I needed to show to the World that the ultimate heroism is forgiving the enemy and moving forward.

Indisputably, the darkest part of our 64-year journey as a nation is the 30 months of civil war from 1967 to 1970 and God almighty whose way is not our way must have a reason why he kept the Chief Prosecutor of the war who is General Gowon alive to be 90 years today and the man who saw the end of the war, Chief Olusegun Obasanjo to be there at 87 years super-heading all the moves to see a reconciled and just Nigeria.

There was also a developing new spirit why the same country, Nigeria, gave the Biafra leader, Dim Chukwuemeka Odumegwu Ojukwu, a heroic national burial on 2 March 2012, when he joined his ancestors, coincidentally under my tenure as Governor of Anambra state.

The status of the burial given to Dim Ojukwu remains the boldest indication to the World that Nigeria as a country is disposed to moving forward in the spirit of reconciliation.

There are various ways human beings can respond to acts of evil, especially one that claimed millions of lives.

One is the tragedy of revenge, and another offers the hope of forgiveness in an attempt to forget. The latter conforms neatly with the template I adopted in greeting Gen Gowon at 90 years old.

In all my dealings with human beings, I try to be guided by my faith as a Christian in a strong message preached by Jesus Christ himself and underscored in reflections in St Paul’s letter to the Colossians 3:13: “Bear with each other and forgive one another: if any of you has a grievance against someone. Forgive as the Lord forgave you.” And to Ephesians 4: 31-32 “Get rid of all bitterness, rage and anger, brawling and slander, along with every form of malice”

Whatever reason I will give for joining the rest of Nigerians to greet General Gowon, May never truly conform with some persons, especially direct victims of the war, but anger, hurt, and bitterness are the commonest responses to cruelty.

It fuels sectarianism, it leads to resistance and avoidable blood feuds that we are witnessing across the globe, and even in our country and it does not abate.

There is something about forgiveness, it sets the person doing it free. Forgiveness is more a process than an instinct.

It’s hate that has put our society, blessed by God to be the greatest land in the black World, down, but this hate has to stop.

I was under ten years old when the Nigeria/Biafra war started in 1967. Most of my supporters across the country joining me get a new Nigeria were born after the war, and I didn’t feel I should drag them back to the dark side of our history by being unforgiving.

I feel such an act will derail the message of a New Nigeria that we insist is POssible.

‘Must you greet him? Why didn’t you keep quiet?’ some angrily say to me, but that will still be injurious to our journey to a new Nigeria where all political vices, including but not limited to ethnic, religious, bitterness, and regional segregation, are eliminated.

Various personal experiences of victims of injustice across the globe who have chosen to put ugly things behind them visibly demonstrate the transformative power of forgiveness in healing personal and collective wounds.

The speech writer ended up adding more subtle insults to the speech by referring to Gowon as the "Enemy." Such adjectives should have been screened out in the light of what is known about the sequence of events leading right up to the Nigerian Civil War which seriously indicted Emeka Ojukwu for his actions and inactions showing that the Ibo secessionist rebel leadership were NOT blameless.

It would have been a nice rebuttal meant for those Ibos who didn't like the FACT that he felicitated with the iconic General Yakubu Gowon (who was the Head of State during the exactly 30 months or 2 years and 6 months Nigerian Civil War from July 1967 to January 1970) on his 90th birthday.

Unknown to a lot of younger Ibos, Col Emeka Odumegwu-Ojukwu (rtd) who was the rebel or secessionist leader in 1967 continued to receive his pension as a former Nigerian Army officer (He was retired as a Colonel) because he was granted state pardon by President Shehu Shagari in the early 1980s. When Emeka Odumegwu-Ojukwu came back to Nigeria from exile in Cote d'Ivoire (where he and his family and close associates had surreptitiously fled to by airplane in early January 1970 from the Uli Air Strip leaving Victor Effiong to do the insl surrendering of the rebels to the galant Federal troops led by Olusegun Obasanjo who was the commander of the 3rd Division of the Nigerian Army and others), he went into politics and contested under the Shehu Shagari-led National Party of Nigeria (NPN) which was the dominant political party that had a lot of Northerner Nigerians (aside from GNPP of Waziri Ibrahim and the PRP of Mallam Aminu Kano). He however lost his bid for an elective post.

Dr. Nnamdi Azikiwe was very bitter and came close to shedding tears in a 1983 documentary that I watched a few years back that was produced by a White British man where he condemned STRONGLY the Presidential pardon that President Shehu Shagari gave to Emeka Ojukwu and he emphasized in that 1983 documentary that 2 of his relatives from Onitsha lost their lives in the Nigerian Civil War because of Ojukwu whose WRONG actions he said led to the death of a lot of Ibos.

Last but NOT least, a lot of younger Ibos who use hate as a tool of blackmail against other Nigerians because of the Nigerian Civil War are NOT aware that Chukwuemeka Ojukwu was associating himself very well with the Awolowo family after the 1987 demise of the iconic lawyer and politician, Chief Jeremiah Obafemi Awolowo, GCFR, SAN. He also referred to Chief Awolowo as "the best President Nigeria never had." It's on record though that the FIRST EVER Nigerian to refer to Chief Jeremiah Obafemi Awolowo, GCFR, SAN, "as the BEST President Nigerian NEVER had" was Mr Dan Agbese of the Newswatch Magazine (co-founded by Agbese, Dele Giwa, Ray Ekpu, and others) in the 1980s.

During the launch of the Chief Obafemi Awolowo Foundation in the late 1980s, Chukwuemeka Ojukwu physically attended the launch of the Foundation and when Ojukwu passed on in 2012, the Obafemi Awolowo Foundation paid a tribute to him and made reference to his physical presence at the launch of the Foundation in the late 1980s. All these were done despite the FACT that Ojukwu himself was behind the spread of FALSEHOODS about Chief Obafemi Awolowo to deflect the attention of people from his blunders during the war via mass propaganda as confirmed by some Ibo writers themselves who witnessed the Nigerian Civil War. So, what this CLEARLY shows is that the elite of the various Nigerian ethnicities largely relate with one another and their children intermarry, but it's the semi-literates and even educated illiterates on the street level that typically fuel crises online and offline with their loads of ethnic bigotry and emotional baggage. A firm knowledge and understanding of Nigerian history and the sequence of events leading right up to the Nigerian Civil War would have enabled especially younger Ibos to see CLEARLY that it's the secessionist leadership that committed monumental blunders by the secession declaration on May 30, 1967 when the other ethnic minorities such as the Ijaws, the Ogonis, the Ibibios, the Annangs, the Ekois or Ejagbams, the Ogojas, Efiks, Efuts, and Quas (the 3 ethnic groups are the indigenes of Calabar) and their political and traditional leadership from the Old Eastern Region of Nigeria had REJECTED Col. Emeka Ojukwu's secession and clearly supported General Yakubu Gowon's May 27, 1967 creation of 12 new states out of which 3 of the new states were from the Old Eastern Region. The Ijaw nationalist, Chief Harold Dappa-Biriye who is an indigene of Bonny Island in Rivers State CLEARLY stated in a 1999 Guardian interview in Port Harcourt that he and other Rivers State leaders of thought such as Ken Saro-Wiwa were the ones who visited General Yakubu Gowon in Lagos from 1966 and 1967 and "influenced" General Yakubu Gowon to create the 12 new states on May 27, 1967 as that would bring about a sense of belonging for all the ethnic minorities and reduce the Ibo domination in the Old Eastern Region. I shared a copy of that historic 1999 interview with a few close folks online before.

Hilary Njoku (who was the FIRST military commander of the secessionist rebel fighters before Alexander Madiebo took over from him) also told Ojukwu that the secession war would fail because there were NOT enough weapons and because of that, he was jailed for being a saboteur alongside Margaret Ekpo and many other Ibos and non-Ibos who were against the doomed secession move of 1967! Hilary Njoku captured all these in his autobiography. Other folks such as Ambassador Raph Uwechue also wrote books condemning the roles that Chukwuemeka Ojukwu played in fuelling the disastrous war and deaths due to his recalcitrance and youthful exuberance being a dude in his early 30s. Before May 1967, 2 commercial planes belonging to Nigeria Airways and Ghana Airways were illegally hijacked on the orders of Ojukwu and taken to Enugu. Those 2 passenger planes were later illegally converted to bombers and one of them was actually shot down by heavy anti-aircraft fire while on a bombing mission in Lagos State with the hired White mercenary pilots and some African crew who were detailed to drop bombs manually over specific targets in Lagos being killed with the shooting of the plane.

The invasion of the Old Midwest Region of Nigeria (now Edo and Delta States) in 1967 which led to the illegal declaration of a "Benin Republic" by the secessionist/rebel invaders was one of the most foolish blunders committed by the young Emeka Odumegwu-Ojukwu and his group, (including the looting of the Central Bank branches, manhandling of the citizens of the Midwest and the desecration of the palace of the Oba of Benin) and these triggered the waves of anger in a lot of the newly created Midwestern State ethnic groups such as the Bini-Edos, Esan-Edos, Etsakos, Ikas, Urhobos, Isokos, etc, and other groups to join the war effort to teach the secessionists a lesson
