MightySparrow:People like you, instead of reading and learning you'd be commenting on things you don't know much about. It was durring the 1954 constitution conference that Awo proposed a secession clause, long before independence. So there was no question of "The idea was to get rid of the external enemy first and then settle internal problems".😅 Awo was supported by the North of course, but vehemently opposed by Zik. In the end the colonial masters sided with Zik and so no secession clause was included! |

DaddyCoool:Aha. Boss?! If Awolowo believed in one Nigeria, rather, a marriage of two strange bed fellows. why would he propose a secession clause? Two people were in courtship, five years before wedding one was suggesting a time in the marriage when they would divorce for any reason best known to him. Okay I am learning from history not your position. The truth is that Awolowo never believed in one Nigeria. He made his intention known his parties and people were in opposition after independence. He ran different governments and programmes from the one of alloy of north and south. How else would he have express himself? When the war eventually broke out, it was between two pact partners. Okay, you people blame Gowon, what about Obasanjo, Benjamin Adekunle and the rest form other tribes who fought the war? Did Gowon even fire a shot at any Igbo man? Till today, the alliance between igbos and the north is still intact and robust. Igbos want to take over Lagos, calling it no man's land. ![]() ![]() Are you aware that the constituction of Lagos is being translated to Yoruba language. It is a signal to other tribes to be wary of. However, my position is still this, it is better for igbos to extend right hand of fellowship to their brothers in the south - Southwest and Southsouth to be able to realize their aims. The north will never allow an Igbo presidency. I lived among them, I know how they reason and dubious ways of politicking. If you are an Igbo person, educate your people. I have no problems with igbos. I am a pure breed of Yoruba race, married to another Yoruba woman. All my children have Igbo names as part of their names. I am only expressing my opinion. The idea of igbos killing themselves and destroying their properties will not work neither will blaming people that killed their people. What is the offence of Dr Akunyili and many others killed by IPOB? Right political alignment is what igbos need. After the war, many igbos have intermarried with more North and other tribes and have built more businesses across the divides. |

DaddyCoool:Why would an Indigenous person of the land be looking for secession clause to leave a country the white man from Europe created? Did the White ask for unity clause before taking your lands, and that of others, to create Nigeria? The point here is that secession clause is not a must fir something that was just a mere colony |

gidgiddy:Well, they were crafting something called a constitution. A constitution that would guide Nigeria when they become independent AND agree to stay together. You get it now? It was Nigerians deciding they want to stay together and under what rules, NOT the white man forcing them. Here's how Zik described it in his own words: In 1953 the NPC under the leadership of my good friend, the late Sardauna, threatened to secede from the federation unless their 6-point proposals were adhered to. I had to use personal diplomacy. We had been personal friends since 1940. So, I saw Sir Ahmadu Bello and prevailed upon him that the unity of this country was greater than himself and myself and the other people too helped so that the North shifted grounds and agreed and so the country was saved. That was in 1953. Again, however, when the 1954 constitution conference started, my good friend, Chief Obafemi Awolowo tabled a motion to the effect that in the new constitution, provision should be made that any state which feels like seceding should do so. I was opposed to it and said ‘no’ and said that once we have a federation, we are indivisible and perpetual. That was when we began to use that expression - ‘The Indivisibility and perpetuity of the federation’ - and that to secede would amount to treason. And so, a debate ensued. The Secretary of State then was Oliver Littleton, later Lord Chandos and he was very much interested and that was his first time in saying that the people of African descent were people actually debating at a high level. So a full day was given to Chief Awolowo to make his points. He spoke brilliantly as a lawyer.. We adjourned. The next day, I had to reply. I availed myself of the opportunity to, well, demolish the arguments of my friend. The North (NPC) supported Action Group. The question was then: Should we have secession? The Colonial Office came to our rescue. YOU KNOW THE USUAL PRINCIPLE OF BRITAIN – ‘ *DIVIDE AND RULE'* (laughs) but this time, it was in our favour. So, the colonial office backed us." Lord Chandos said that on the face of the arguments before him it would be suicidal to incorporate secession in our constitution and that is why we have section 86 in our constitution that if any region or state should secede, then it will be an act of treason |

DaddyCoool:I understand that, but no unity is set in stone. It's not must you must have a secession clause. As I said before, Britain that created Nigeria, has no secession clause. But Britain gave Scotland referendum in 2014. The same Britain left the EU in 2016 referendum So this talk that unless you have a secession clause, you must live together like siamese twins forever, is absolutely ridiculous. Particularly for people who were joined together with no unity clause |

gidgiddy:Anyway, secession clause would have been mere semantics. If North wanted to secede no one could have prevented them from seceding nor wanted them not to secede (except Zik ). Likewise, the only reason it was worth fighting for that East not secede was oil. Secession clause could not have prevented the war! |
| Re: When Is Gowon Going To Write A Book? by gidgiddy: 6:02pm On Oct 23, 2024 |
DaddyCoool:Even the oil has helped nobody. Many countries with no oil in Africa such as South Africa, Egypt, Ghana and Morocco are doing better than Nigeria |
| Re: When Is Gowon Going To Write A Book? by DaddyCoool(f): 6:38pm On Oct 23, 2024 |
gidgiddy:Oil has proved to be a curse in many instances. If it wasn't that unbelievable amounts of money from oil was just starting to gush in, why would North that always wanted secession suddenly want one Nigeria to the extent of going to war for it??!! |
