Israel says it killed Hashem Safieddine, the potential successor of the slain Hezbollah leader in a strike in a southern Beirut suburb three weeks ago.

Israel Defense Forces announced the elimination of Safieddine on Tuesday.

It announced that Safieddine, Head of the Hezbollah Executive Council and Ali Hussein Hazima, Commander of Hezbollah’s Intelligence Headquarters, were “eliminated during a strike on Hezbollah’s main intelligence HQ in Dahieh approx. 3 weeks ago”.

It said, “Hashem Safieddine was a member of the Shura Council, Hezbollah's most senior military-political forum, responsible for the decision-making and policy-making in the terrorist organization.

“Hashem was the cousin of Hassan Nasrallah, the former leader of Hezbollah, and had a significant influence on decision-making within Hezbollah.

“During times when Nasrallah was absent from Lebanon, Hashem filled in as the Secretary-General of Hezbollah. Throughout the years, Safieddine directed terrorist attacks against the State of Israel and took part in Hezbollah's central decision-making processes.

“Alongside Hashem, the terrorist Ali Hussein Hazima, the Commander of Hezbollah's Intelligence Headquarters, was also eliminated. He was responsible for directing numerous attacks on IDF soldiers.”

Israel Claims Killing Of Hamas Commander With U.N. Ties Amid Ongoing Conflict

Israel's military announced on Thursday that it has killed a Hamas commander, Mohammad Abu Itiwi, who was allegedly involved in the group's attack on southern Israel on October 7, 2023.

The Israeli Defense Forces (IDF) reported that Abu Itiwi, who had been employed by the U.N. Relief and Works Agency for Palestine Refugees in the Near East (UNRWA) since July 2022, was responsible for the murder and abduction of Israeli civilians during the attack.

This revelation comes in the wake of ongoing tensions between Israel and Hamas, with the Israeli government alleging that several UNRWA employees are connected to militant activities.

An investigation by the United Nations in August identified nine UNRWA staff members who were possibly linked to the October 7 attacks, leading to their dismissal.

Reuters reports that UNRWA confirmed that Itiwi was an employee who was killed on Wednesday.

The agency noted that Itiwi's name appeared in a letter from Israel received in July, which listed 100 staff members alleged to be affiliated with armed groups, including Hamas.

Juliette Touma, UNRWA's director of communications, stated, "The UNRWA commissioner general responded to that letter immediately, emphasizing that any allegation is taken seriously. He urged the Israeli government to cooperate with the agency by providing additional information for further action. To date, UNRWA has not received a response to that letter."

UNRWA provides education, health care, and aid to millions of Palestinians across Gaza, the West Bank, Jordan, Lebanon, and Syria.

Historically, its relations with Israel have been strained, but tensions have escalated since the onset of the war in Gaza, with Israel repeatedly calling for UNRWA's disbandment.

Israeli military spokesperson Rear Admiral Daniel Hagari stated, "Israel has requested urgent clarifications from senior UN officials and an immediate investigation into the involvement of UNRWA employees in the Oct. 7 massacre."
