Nigerian actor and lawyer Anayo Modestus Onyekwere, popularly known as Kanayo O. Kanayo, has expressed concerns over the heavy military and police presence in Southeast Nigeria, drawing attention to the challenges faced by travelers in the region. The Nollywood actor took to his Instagram account to share his experience, asking:

“Have you ever counted the number of Police/Army checkpoints on the Enugu/Onitsha Road? The humiliation and extortion are too much. Is the Southeast still part of the Federal Republic of Nigeria?”

In a video posted on his Instagram on October 23, 2024, the actor, while seated in a moving car, compared his journey from Ibadan to Lagos with the experience of traveling in the Southeast, where numerous checkpoints have become a source of frustration for many.

"I left Felele Olorunsogo area of Ibadan this morning at 7:15, and now, at exactly 8:15, I am in Lagos. I realized one thing—over the 80-kilometer distance, I didn’t see a single police or army checkpoint. Have you ever traveled the Onitsha-Enugu road and counted the number of police or military checkpoints?" he remarked.

There are more killings in the North Central than the South East, why isn't North Central militarised as the South East?

The killings in the North West is so bad that you can get up and hear that 80 people were killed in Kebbi State alone in a single day. Even Katsina where Buhari comes from is crying. Why haven't we seen this level of Soldiers on the streets?

The real reason why Soldiers are on the streets in the SE has nothing to do with insecurity. All those ones know is to be mounting illegal roadblocks and extorting businessmen

You should go and sit in a gutter. Every statistics that habe been pasted here, shows that there are more violent crimes in the west. Even in the north east, there are no checkpoints like this. These checkpoints in the east predates Nnamdi kanu and have been there since i was born. Every pole. Police and military men basically collecting money daily on gun point. This has to stop.

Till today they prefer to attack Awolowo and Gowon for the civil war that killed many Igbos while they continue to hail Ojukwu, a hypocritical coward who arrogantly took them into a war him and Igbos could not win, as a "great hero".

To the extent our cultural leaders are raising alarm that SW, to the detriment of Yorubas, may host 50% of the Nigerian population in the near future if leadership irresponsibility continue in regions like the SE, North and Middle Belt.

No single checkpoint from Ibadan to Lagos!! Haba. Not true naa.

While I agree it's quite much along the Enugu-Onitsha road, it's equally heavy along Shagamu down to Benin/Asaba where there are well over 50 checkpoints.

They don’t understand the dilemma they are in simply because SW choose to play fair and not be like the extremely hostile ethnics like we have in other tribe enclave.

The day the SW go radical and make the West hostile for everybody will be the day these guys know the implication of them making their region boil.

It’s easy for them to cause chaos in Anambra, next day runaway to Ibadan or Lagos, then stay at the comfort of the peaceful West and whitewash the security situation in the East.

The day they know they have nowhere else to go when gbege happens in their land, coz SW is now a hostile terrain for them, then no one will tell them before their brain reformat.

You Don talk am finish baba. They are the Gypsies of Nigeria and the ones who go hear wien the most when, as is inevitable, Nigeria embraces regional autonomy. Most people don't succeed in life because they focus on the wrong things.

Tinubu promised before the election he would set up regional commissions to help all regions develop optimally. Today the Senate is daily approving the birth of development commissions for regions of Nigeria. Subtle clue he is gaining traction with his plans to ensure all regions develop optimally by leveraging on their strength, rather than continuing to present begging bowls to Abuja, as he achieved with Lagos that eventually became the only Nigerian State that can run itself without FG allocation.

The inevitable is obvious but some won't see it let alone plan for it. They will prefer to remain hating and insulting meaning, as has always been the case historically , they will end up crying and writhing in pain when what is obvious and unavoidable becomes a reality.

They won't always have the SW to run to only to be fighting and insulting Yorubas while defending the rubbish in the SE that made them flee the region, with their entire family, in the first place. For example, most of the most vociferous backers of Kanu, Ekpa and IPOB live outside the SE.
