10 Reasons Tinubu May Have Decided To Sack Tahir, Former Minister Of Education by AquaBekee(op): 9:57am On Oct 24, 2024
Here are the 10 reasons listed for why President Tinubu may have decided to sack Tahir, the former Minister of Education:

Providing Misinformation Leading to Diplomatic Conflict: Tahir's statements led to a diplomatic misunderstanding between Nigeria, Benin Republic, and Togo, resulting in the suspension of degree programs from universities in these countries.

Misrepresenting Accredited Universities in Benin: He wrongly claimed that only 3 universities in Benin were accredited, while the actual number is over 50, causing confusion about the legitimacy of these institutions.

Denial of NYSC Scheme to Foreign Students: His unprofessional handling of foreign students' participation in the NYSC scheme caused thousands of Nigerian graduates from Benin and Togo to be denied entry into the program and The Ministry of Education's failure to address the needs of stranded foreign students whose scholarships are unpaid or delayed leads to significant challenges.

Interagency Conflicts: Under Tahir’s leadership, there were conflicts among key educational bodies like the NBTE, NUC, NYSC, and JAMB. This lack of coordination led to conflicting information, resulting in graduates being denied participation in the NYSC or professional exams.

Inefficiency in Accreditation Processes: Despite visiting over 50 universities for accreditation in a year, none of them were approved, showcasing bureaucratic delays and inefficiency.

Interference in Agency Appointments: Tahir's meddling in appointments across various agencies and boards under the Ministry of Education caused dissatisfaction and inefficiency in the management of educational institutions.

18-Year Admission Policy: His implementation of an 18-year minimum age policy for university admissions resulted in a lawsuit against the Ministry, as many saw it as restrictive and discriminatory.

Pronouncement on Degrees from Benin and Togo: Tahir declared that Nigerians who had obtained certificates from universities in Benin and Togo would be sacked from public service and prosecuted, which led to many Nigerians losing their jobs and caused widespread unrest.

False Promise of Stipend for Unemployed Graduates: He falsely claimed that the federal government would pay stipends to all unemployed graduates in Nigeria, a promise that was not part of the government’s agenda and created false expectations.

Lack of Cohesion with Other Officials: There was a noticeable lack of cooperation and harmony between Tahir and the Minister of State for Education, as well as other senior officials, leading to inefficiency in the Ministry’s operations.

These reasons may have contributed to President Tinubu's decision to relieve him of his duties.

From the case of Professor Tahir Mamman, Dr Betta Edu, Uju Ohanenye, Lola Ade-John amd the former Minister of Youth, we can deduce as follows:

(1) Don't get carried away when given ministerial appointment. If you can't do the job, be open to working with those who can do the job.

(2) Avoid using your position to appoint only your people into agencies you supervise. When the list of governing council was released, it was skewed to one state that the issue was raised by Babajide Kolade-Otitoju on TVC News' Journalists' Hangout. The list had to be withdrawn and revised.

(3) Try to avoid issues concerning funds. Don't ever sign off on funds. Each Ministry has an accounting officer. Don't take their job from them. Although I don't support fraud, but if the accounting officer commits fraud, he'd cover it. Now I am not sure if the perm sec of Humanitarian Affairs Ministry was suspended along with the minister.

(4) Avoid bringing friends and praisesingers. Hire professionals to advise you because you may not know everything.

(5) Avoid going to give testimony when your way is not pure.

(6) Never use government letterhead for personal business. One of the former ministers used her Ministry letterhead to invite people for her husband's birthday.

(7) Learn the art of public speaking and diplomacy. Be reluctant to rush to comment on sensitive issues. First example, someone railed against the issue of mass marriage in one state and ended up offending the people concerned. No matter how noble your intentions are, be slow to react but be faster to understand.

(8 ) See ministerial work as a temporary job that can go at anytime. Everyday reduces your time there. Don't get carried away. Some people have spent their lives trying to return to becoming ministers. They may never get back there again.

I only have problem with d 18 yrs admission policy.... D Benin and Togo University ban is very much justified.... If you want to argue go and watch d premium times investigation of how someone got a 4 yrs certificate within 6 months and he even served.... D funniest thing was that, he served twice, and even collected alawee, that means u can serve multiple times without getting caught, d guy killed two birds with one stone.... He exposed nysc and Benin republic Universities at the same time

Or maybe Tpain wants to leverage the sacking to ASUU, ASUP, JAC etc. to claim he is responding to their complains, which he loves to use delay tactics to never deliver anything you ever promised

Not only him most of the Ministers in his cabinet should have been axed if he is serious to work because a lot of them can't produce anything meaningful. What is the minister of power still doing in his position when that one talks you just wonder how be became a minister. Onanuga should have been axed as well

This man left all the important areas to address in Nigeria education only to be implementing policies that is targeted at a particular region. He left out of school children, issues of strike, and improving our universities to start fabricating machines to enhance development.....

Arguably the most confused Minister. drawing back the hands of the clock with the 18-year policy. I am certain all his children have graduated from the uni.

All the best to the new education minister. He would need it as the pressure from the students and parents would be too much.
