Nnamdi Kanu's Detention: Nigeria Has An Igbo Problem, Says Sowore

The presidential candidate of the African Action Congress (AAC) in the 2023 general election, Omoyele Sowore, has said that the continuous detention of the leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB), Mazi Nnamdi Kanu, is a confirmation that the Nigerian State has an Igbo problem.

Sowore, who said this during an interview with Rudolf Okonkwo in 90Minutes Africa on Sunday, added that the pro-Biafra agitator is a victim of the post-civil war treatment that the country has meted out to the Igbo.

"Nigeria has an Igbo problem. It's like when a father is dying, they will tell their children, I have a problem with Igbo people; please continue from there," the political activist stated.

Kanu escaped from Nigeria in 2017 while on bail, standing trial on charges of terrorism in a Federal High Court after an invasion of his residence by the Nigerian military.

On June 27, 2021, he was arrested in Kenya by Interpol, working with Nigerian security officials, and brought to Nigeria in an act of extraordinary rendition.

On October 22, 2022, the Court of Appeal in Abuja declared the extradition of the IPOB leader illegal and ordered his immediate release.

The Nigerian government, however, continued to hold him in detention and filed an appeal at the Supreme Court against the Appellate Court order.

The Supreme Court, in its ruling, acknowledged the illegality of Kanu's extradition but insisted that it was not enough to set him free and ordered that the terrorism of Biafra agitator should continue.

Kanu has since remained in the custody of the Department of State Services (DSS) while facing seven counts bordering on terrorism at the Federal High Court.

Sowore, who himself has been in and out of the detention facilities of the DSS, said he didn't expect that the Bola Tinubu administration would follow the path of the Buhari administration in holding Nnamdi Kanu prisoner.

"I expected that the first act of Tinubu in office would have been to release Nnamdi Kanu. But the fact that it got worse shows that there is a kind of conspiracy going on," the former University of Lagos students' union president indicated.

"I also know that there are some Igbo elite who are complicit in his detention because there was a time when there were discussions about his release, and they said it should hold on until after the election, Sowore added.

"And now, after the election, the devil seems to have intervened more strongly."

The political activist expressed his lack of faith in the possibility of Kanu getting any justice from the Nigerian judicial system because the president influences the system.

"Kanu is the official prisoner of whoever is the president of Nigeria. They report his condition to the president daily," he explained.

"There is no way he's going to get justice from the courts unless the Nigerian State decides to let him go."

cheesy

Useless opinion of a woeful failure

Treason is a highly punishable offence and in a more advanced country like China where the Most Excellent XI Jinping reigns supreme, he'd have been put in a cage and submerged into the middle of India Ocean

Unionism or Activism isnt anything close to this. He's a terrorist and he should be treated like one and No, it has nothing to do with Igbos

He called for the killings of military men and top Govt officials, all those have nothing to do with fighting for your tribe

Nice one Sowore! Everybody sees this but the usual suspects! Their analysis of the situation is flawed ab-initio because they look at the Issue from the position of seeing Ndigbo as their ‘slaves’ and a ‘conquered’ people!

Nigeria government likes the destruction by IPOB going on in Southeast and want it to continue that is the reason why they are reluctant in finding lasting solution to the problem.

I wish ipob was as powerful and deadly as mossed. Some people never see anything wrong with oppression until you become a victim.

Igboho is walking around free. Miyetti Allah president is walking around free, Dokubo and tompolo who once picked arms against the government are all free and languishing in stupendous wealth. Nnamdi Kanu is languishing in jail.his only crime is that he is igbo.
May God curse and destroy everything oppressive from the face of the earth be it a country, people, organization, etc

I tot Sowore was a fresh breath but it's now obvious that he is after all still a politician with a deceptive mindset and he thinks the SE is a potential marketable vote for his ambitions. What about the victims of I.pobs, the civilians who have been killed for defying sit-at-home order, the force men and women killed, the destroyed property during endsars protest? Are we to pretend those never happened?

After he collects grant from the west to destabilize his country, he go come dey form activist. Oga go find one place rest, Kanu shouldn't be freed now.

Sowore is just being petty.

Kanu's issue is not about Igbo but about his actions and inactions

Dude, keep on telling your tired lies! At this point i doubt if even you believes them! You tactic of carrying out senseless and murderous attacks in the south-east then coming on media to declare ‘IPOB did it’ or ‘Igbo are killing Igbo because they want Biafra’ has worn thin! Think of another deceitful strategy!

Incidentally, care to tell us where you’re from? The way you Igbo-haters carry on with your smug and superior attitude and lecture Ndigbo on security and good moral conduct, one should assume your own region is a oasis of peace and tranquility in the wider he’ll hole that is Nigeria!

Sowore want to gather votes maybe even merge with LP.

Nnamdi Kanu is a narcissist, he suffers terribly from vanity - he thinks too highly of himself, he changed his name from Nnamdi Kanu to Mazi Nnamdi Kanu (MNK) to plagiarize (MLK) Martin Luther King, he allows people to bow down before him and worship him, he allows an entire region to be shutdown because of him and he never stopped wearing that Fendi.

People like that can never be negotiated with, releasing him would never be framed as the kindness of Nigerian justice system, it would be framed as the mighty intelligence of Nnamdi Kanu and proof that Chike Okike Shalom is on his side...

People who think releasing Nnamdi Kanu would bring peace are the same sort of morons who thought giving Hitler Czechoslovakia would make him stop his invasions, You never negotiate with Tyrants.

This is all Buhari's fault, Buhari should have made him disappear in Kenya no evidence-no explanation but Buhari's strong sense of justice clouded his better judgement.

It was the UK Government that actually told the Kenya Government that he was on his way to Kenya. The Kenya Government and NIGERIA Government did the rest.

The UK didn't want the backlash of arresting him in the UK, because it will awaken internal problems concerning their citizens calling for BIAFRA and an end to BRITISH colonial interest in the modern era.

We need a BIAFRA Mossad type group.. cool
