Lagos Targets Tourism, Commerce Rise Through Cultural Mission by Lanrelagboi(op): 8:13pm On Oct 25, 2024
As part of efforts to boost the Lagos Gross Domestic Product (GDP), the State Government has unveiled its Cultural Mission Initiative, designed to showcase the Lagos cultural heritage to the world and aid partnership with countries globally.

Through this initiative, the government also aimed to boost local and foreign tourists visit all year round to Lagos as well as increase buying and selling between the tourist and their host.

It noted that the vision behind the initiative is to make Lagos the culture powerhouse for Africa, where joint festivals, educational exchanges, and tourism promotions will be determined.

Spearheading the initiative, the Special Adviser to the Governor on Tourism, Arts, and Culture, Idris Aregbe, noted that Lagos’ rich cultural heritage must be promoted, saying we must tell our story to the world.

While stressing that the mission will solidify Lagos as global hub for culture, arts, and tourism, the governor’s aide stressed that the initiative will strengthen diplomatic ties with nations worldwide.

Aregbe disclosed this at the launch of Lagos Cultural Mission Movement at the Nike Arts Gallery, Lekki, yesterday, theme: “Advancing the Essence of Culture”, featured art exhibitions, cultural performances, and traditional food display, which was attended by representatives from over 20 embassies.

According to him, the Lagos State Cultural Mission Initiative is to ensure a year-round calendar of activities designed to create ongoing opportunities for learning, collaboration, and global partnerships.

“We are using this mission to promote international collaboration and advance cultural diplomacy between Lagos and other nations.

“Through this mission, we are creating lasting cultural partnerships that will not only benefit Lagos but also build bridges and foster mutual respect and collaboration with our international friends. Together, we are advancing culture and elevating Lagos as a global meeting point for creativity and connection.

Under the initiative, Aregbe said the youth will have the platform to interact with elders, get acquainted with the state’s cultural heritage to prevent it from going extinct.

He described it as a journey to explore, discover and celebrate the beauty of the state to increase investor confidence in the commercial nerve centre.

“We need to be able to tell our story and sit down and learn more about our values. We came up with this Lagos Cultural Mission, and what we intend to do is to tell our story and make sure that we appeal to lovers of Lagos.

“Let’s see how we can help each other, let’s see how we can cater for more youths on the streets. We have a lot of people waiting to add value to Lagos, we want to continue to give them a platform,”
he added.

Earlier, the founder of Nike Arts Gallery, Nike Okundaye-Davies, appealed to the minister of interior to make entry visa easy for tourists, saying this will encourage more visitors into Nigeria.

“We want the minister to make visa easy for those who want to invest. It is difficult to get a Nigerian visa, we need to address this”.

The lack of state-owned pipe-borne water in the homes of Lagos residents has continued to be a source of concern, a non-profit group, Corporate Accountability and Public Advocacy Africa (CAPPA) has said.

At a press event to mark this year’s World Water Day, the group said its monitoring team’s visit to state-owned waterworks showed that most of them are not operational.

The group said the waterworks it visited include the ones at Maryland, Mushin, Ikorodu, Obalende, Agbowa, Onikan, Ikoyi, and Amuwo Odofin.

Only the one in Ikoyi is producing water, according to CAPPA.

A 45-year-old resident and father of three, Mr.Fatai Lamide told PUNCH HealthWise that no building in the community has toilet facilities.

The Oyo State-born mechanic said, “We don’t have toilet in this area, including our compound. This canal that you see serves as toilet to all of us living in this area. We defecate inside nylon and throw it inside the canal.

“For people that don’t want to use nylon, they have a special bucket that they use after which they pour it inside the canal too.

Why have you been bitter about any development news related to Lagos state?

It's doable. With the expansion of the rail Blue and Red Line services, it'll ease the movement of tourists from Nigeria and internationally from one end of Lagos to another end.

Second, places such as Lagos Island have to be gentrified and houses painted in the Isake Eko, Brazilians Quarters and Popo Aguda areas for instance. Some folks from Brazil and Cuba for instance would like to see how Yoruba returnees or emancipados from those countries and their descendants have thrived since returning to Africa from the mid-1800s down to the early 1900s.

Infact there's a whole lot of gentrifications to do in the 5 divisions of Lagos State to sustain the interests of tourists.

Last but not least, aside from providing timely security and have certified tour guides integrated into that security awareness network, Lagos State has to accelerate the introduction of portable bio toilets or biodigester public toilets that produce biogas (which is about 60 percent methane) in order to allow folks to ease themselves for a token and then use the gas for off-grid electrification and even cooking. I remember that Chief MKOs former bodyguard Otunba Isaac Durojaiye popularly known as Otunba Gaddafi (was the first to start something like that years ago until he suddenly passed on in 2012).

wink no be only tourism na toutism. Imagine a foreigner driving through oshodi bus station to see that all the sidewalk are littered with faeces.

Or they stay at a friend's place only to die of generator noise.

Or in the traffic area boys are acting up.
Hmm. Maybe they'll stay at fasholas place.

Re: Lagos Targets Tourism, Commerce Rise Through Cultural Mission by Nobody: 9:25pm On Oct 25, 2024
Lagos cannot be a sane city/state for real international tourism as long as Danfo and Korope exist on her roads.

They flaunt traffic laws; they drive recklessly their carcase and zombie vehicles.
They stop anywhere and anytime.
They share a spirit of aggression, recklessness, dirt and acute illiteracy.
They operate above any sane movement of traffic or order.

Interestingly, the large red and blue (BRT) have joined the game.

Also, a spirit operates with Corolla drivers. They accelerate and aggressively horn if you try to switch lanes to their front, even if they are a safe distance away.

Overall, fear any vehicle with MFM Stickers behind it. They prefer an accident to happen than to allow you to enter their lane when your lane is blocked; for example when danfos suddenly stops right in front.

All these alone are anti-tourism.
