A student of the Obada Idi-Emi High School in the Imeko Afon Local Government Area of Ogun State, identified simply as Ariyo, has died after a teacher allegedly beat him with 162 strokes of the cane for breaking a dustbin.

An activist identified as Adetoun shared the incident on Instagram on Friday.

According to Adetoun, the teacher had reportedly brought a dustbin to Ariyo’s class with instructions that the students should not break the dustbin.

She narrated that Ariyo had jokingly replied to the teacher that the dustbin was bought with the students’ money, a response which was said to have infuriated the teacher.

The teacher was said to have reported to the principal who instructed that the student be punished.

Acting on the principal’s instruction, the teacher allegedly flogged Ariyo with 162 strokes of the cane and in the process, the student fell and collapsed.

Adetoun said further that the teacher and some staffers of the school who were at the scene delayed in taking Ariyo to the hospital for medical attention and when they did, he was dead.

A senior police officer confirmed privy to the incident but was not authorised to speak with the media confirmed the incident to our correspondent.

He said that the incident created tension in the area but the intervention of the police brought it under control.

“We are on the matter, the incident wanted to create tension but we were able to douse the tension,” the police source said.

The spokesperson for the Ogun State Police Command was yet to respond to enquiries on the incident sent to her line as of the time of filing this report.

You don't have to be too hard on these unruly students. They'll never give-in because stubbornness is in their DNA. As a teacher, just try to command their respect. That's all.

Sadism is very common in Nigeria secondary school.

I attended Unity School, my class mistress would tell us to touch our toe, and then she would flog our spinal cord wit so much hatred in her aggression. They used to call her "Wicked Agric Mistress"




Maturity is a good thing, teachers should be tested psychologically before being allowed into the classroom. They should be made to undergo monthly disciplinary program and a reminder that they are moulder of young minds and not dictators.

A TRUE SITUATION OF OBADA COMMUNITY HIGH SCHOOL INCIDENCE BY ASUSS OGUN STATE.

Comrades since yesterday I have been receiving different video from a blogger named Toun about the death of one of our students at Obada in Imeko Avon Local Government.

Please permit me to give you all what happened, the deceased was not the only one beaten but entire class of SS 2 because when the Principal of the school was addressing the students on the assembly that she has used her money to buy big waste dust bins for the school which shall be placed at strategic place in the compound, one of them said 'is it not with our money that you used to buy it', the principal asked them to fetch the culprit out but none of them was ready to talk, this made the whole class to be given two strokes of a cane each in the presence of the school Principal and not 162 as the blogger have said.

It was later on that when they found out after the deceased have been beaten that he fell down and was quickly treated medically that they found marks on his body, after he regained consciousness, they asked him what happened and he said he had a bike accident prior to the time he was beaten with others because they saw marks on his body, they told him why can't he speak out that he was not well so that he can be spared and later attended to when he will be alright, he said he doesn't feel like telling anyone but as we all know death won't come without hanging on something. It's a pity we lost our son but in the interest of the live involved, I appeal that we allow the matter to be because the parent is still mourning now seriously.

The Union leadership is on top of this issue and we are planning to visit the parent anytime . A sane individual at this time won't be writing or sending unwarranted video that will be bringing sorrow more to the deceased parent.

The emergency journalists should keep off on this issue to respect the grief of we the parents and teaching as a whole.

Please disregard all videos being spread on social media pages my dear comrades.

May God comfort and console our dear parent of the deceased and may we not see this type again in our midst. As we all know every job has his hazards, this is one of the hazards we must accept.

There are many ways to punish a student if he's too stubborn that will not harm him and this excludes frog jump or use of cane

They delayed taking him to hospital for medical attention because they thought he was pretending? The teacher and the Principal need to be prosecuted and imprisoned.

162. When he is not a goat

As a teacher you must learn to control your anger. This is really sad. 162 strokes of water cane is too much to bear.

I used to be so ruthless on stubborn students but had to calm down later when my Bosses started complaining and students were getting too scared of me
