Accountability: Sanwo-olu Seeks Post-governorship Immunity Through Court by TonyeBarcanista(op): 7:21pm On Oct 29, 2024
On June 6, 2024, Governor Babajide Sanwoolu dragged the EFCC to the Federal High Court Abuja in suit number FHC/ABJ/CS/773/2024, seeking the following prayers:

1. An order restraining the EFCC from harassing, intimidating, arresting, detaining, interrogating or prosecuting him in connection with his tenure as the governor of Lagos State.

2. An order prohibiting and restraining the commission “from seizing his property, passport and travel documents of or freezing the bank accounts of the plaintiff, his family members or in any other way to further breach the plaintiff’s fundamental rights guaranteed under the constitution.”

3. An order restraining the EFCC from inviting, arresting or detaining him in connection with his tenure as governor of the state or breach his fundamental rights to personal liberty, fair hearing, private and family life, freedom of movement, acquisition of moveable and immoveable property as enshrined in the laws.

Public servants acting like they're above the law while in office is bad enough, but seeking immunity through the courts after leaving office to avoid accountability is a new low. This is essentially trying to evade justice by using the very system meant to hold them accountable.

Imagine, after abusing power and influence, they think they can just run to court and get a free pass? That's not how it's supposed to work, no decent society would tolerate this. The courts should be a place for seeking justice, not a refuge for those trying to escape accountability.

I hope Hon. Justice Joyce Abdulmalik sees right through Sanwoolu's tactic and refuses to grant him pseudo-immunity. Instead, she should fine him for filing a vexatious suit. That would send a strong message that the courts will not tolerate abuse of power or attempts to undermine accountability.

These are the kind of leaders Lagos state is producing. Thieves, drug lords.

After your tenure, you don't want to be called upon to give account of how you spent the common wealth of Lagosians

Rivers State former Governor Peter Odili obtained similar favors at the twilight of his tenure in 2007. Sadly, the Commission/FG mischievously refuses to vacate it. It's not peculiar to Lagos State alone

Toh

Why not go to court or what's all this online ranting about?

You were no where to be found all through the Rivers LG disgrace, you suddenly appeared and want to be putting mouth in something that shouldn't have concerned you?

Between Lagos state and Rivers state politics, which should you have been cared about?

Stop going down the lane bro

But why should a public servant not want to be called upon to give an account of his stewardship?

This is unconstitutional and should be thrown to the dustbin. Your socalled immunity evaporates the very day your tenure ends. Infact, if there should be any changes, it should be to remove the whole immunity nonsense for sitting executives. We just copied that thing from the west. I don't see how that immunity clause helps us here. It is one reason why these governors and presidents act like emperors.

The boldness in seeking judicial refuge from accountability is what is surprising. Citizens need to hold public officers accountable. Sadly, a young man is trying to play "ethnic" card.
