Nigeria, West African Nations To Adopt Unified Driver’s License, Others - FRSC by BeeBeeOoh(op): 8:26pm On Oct 29, 2024
Nigeria, alongside other West African countries, is set to adopt a unified driver’s license and vehicle registration system as part of a regional effort to streamline transportation and enhance road safety.

The Federal Road Safety Corps is also collaborating with the Economic Community of West African States through the West African Road Safety Organisation to develop a Regional Vehicle Administration and Information System.

The FRSC Corps Marshal, Shehu Mohammed, disclosed this at a workshop on inter-agency collaboration in Abuja on Tuesday.

Represented by Deputy Corps Marshal Clement Oladele, he stated that the initiatives aim to create a standardised system for driver’s licenses, vehicle number plates, and documentation across the region.

He added that it would also foster the free movement of vehicles, people, goods, and services in ECOWAS countries.

Mohammed said, “FRSC is partnering with ECOWAS through the West African Road Safety Organisation to work on the adoption of a uniform licensing scheme called the Regional Vehicle Administration and Information System.

“The initiative is geared towards having a common driver’s license, vehicle number plates, and documentation, as well as the enforcement of traffic infractions and generation of critical data across West Africa.

The scheme, when fully implemented, will promote seamless vehicle registration in West Africa and enhance the free movement of vehicles, persons, goods, and services, as enshrined in the ECOWAS protocol on free movement.

“It will also prevent multiple registrations and assist in reducing vehicle theft within the ECOWAS subregion. FRSC, under the auspices of ECOWAS, is working towards partnering with members of WASO to develop digital number plates and motor vehicle particulars with the installation of solid acrylic that is weather-resistant in vehicles.”

He also mentioned that the initiative proposes linking each driver’s license to the holder’s bank account, making it compatible with digital payment systems.

Mohammed said, “These initiatives aim to link the national driver’s license to the owner’s bank account, details which will not only serve as debit cards but are also in line with the FRSC’s grand strategy to partner with the banking sector in enhancing highway enforcement.”

Nice development but only if we all have our driving side at the left side (not sure of Benin and Cameroon)

Should be based on demand, especially for those doing international travels within the region. Not to be forced on everyone.

How these people come up with such ideas I don't even understand!!!!

Every country should have their own pattern for driver license and number plates while that which is for ECOWAS because of regional trade they should also have a different pattern for such so that those who are into regional trade and business with their vehicles can opt for that a proper identification process and data base be kept to maintain security.

Trying to make all ECOWAS states have same drivers license and vehicle number plates will cause a serious insecurity problem in and for Nigeria since we already have one that is yet to be tackled given the prone nature of our boarders and attitude of all those who are expected to mount the boarders.

It won't be forced on anyone because it will be automatic issue for new Licence and renewal also. It will State your Country of origin but will carry the status of allowing you to drive anywhere in West Africa. Good idea IMO.

Will improve regional trade and reduce corruption significantly as immigration extort drivers who trsvel across West Africa ruthlessly.

It can work and work well if database accuracy and management is efficient. The bigger picture is that Nigeria stands to gain massively because of our population.

The LFTZ, for example, is a free trade zone that will make Nigeria the trading hub of West Africa. With standardised vehicular particulars and drivers license, transport and logistic operators can quickly reach Nigeria from anywhere in West Africa, load up and leave.

Massively increasing our potentials for exporting Nigerian goods and facilitating transactions between West African businesses in a free trade zone.

It should work cos no west African Countries have their driving side on the right (drive on the left). Cameroon isn't part of the region

In the African continent you drive on the left in Botswana, Kenya, Mauritius, Mozambique, Namibia, Lesotho, Malawi, South Africa, Swaziland (Eswatini), Seychelles, Sri Lanka, Tanzania, Zambia, Zimbabwe and Uganda

It is not about Nigeria alone. Keep that in mind. In any arrangement that allows greater free movement of good and services within West Africa, Nigeria will be the big winner. Always.

The problem is that when it comes to Nigeria, every scheme is an avenue to milk Nigerians. By the way, if I don't plan to take my car across the borders, why should it be important to me?

Let us not deceive ourselves of what is not reality as long as it concerns security.
Even the countries in under UN, NATO, EU don't share the same driver license and vehicle registration number plates, people who have a better security network and data base than Nigeria don't and will not even do such.....How much more Nigeria!!

What exactly is the drive for this if not for the agency to look for ways to enrich themselves through such registrations..

Is it not this same country that we have been given NIN, BVN, DRIVERS LICENSE, VOTERS CARD, MULTIPLE SIM CARDS FROM ALL THE DIFFERENT NETWORK PROVIDER AND YET THE SECURITY AGENCIES AND APPARATUS ARE STILL LAGGING AND SECURITY IS GETTING WORSE.....
And you want FRSC to have a data base....
The one they have what have they been doing with it...

Yes I agree with you that new schemes may be conduits of corruption in our nation where most dream of Avenues to loot daily but Nigeria alone will not be funding this because it is a regional scheme.

Also, this idea is good and beneficial for Nigeria because we'd be the biggest beneficiary of better movement of good and services within West Africa.

Yes you don't plan to take your car across borders for now but you may actually like the benefit of doing so in future if you have goods and services you wish to reach outside Nigeria or the other way around. I.e goods and services outside Nigeria you wish to reach you.

Is it number plate and driving license that hinders free movement or checkpoints and bad roads?
